It isn't the ride across chicago that bothers me it is,
926 miles round trip from Novi to Appleton no ferry.
554 miles with ferry.

That is 372 miles less that MJ can break down ;)

Tony figure you'd be closer to $50 rather then $80 on the account of your gas that you'd spend for the difference. I'd spend the extra $30 if you wanted to make best timing.

This is an perfect opportunity to give the ferry a try. If you don't like it you always have the opportunity to drive through Chicago and pay tolls.
I know the new Milwaukee ferry is up and running, I'm not sure if the older one is still running out of Sheboygan?
My guess is both are running.

there is one that runs out of Ludington and drops you off in Manitowoc. one way is $52, round trip is $87 for a car and $29 each way for a motorcycle. the boat leaves ludington at 9am (et), and arrives in Manitowoc at 12pm (ct). if my map is correct Manitowoc is only half a finger away from appleton (about an hour?).

website is ssbadgerdotcom

hope this helps

A few years back I was headed from Minneapolis to Detroit via the UP when the M2L started losing oil at an alarming rate around Green Bay. I grabbed a gallon jug of 15W-40 diesel rated oil at Fleet Farm per the Motor Company's backup oil reccomendations and rerouted via the ferry across the lake. Had a great ride on the ferry, knocked several hundred miles off the trip, and made it home without using up the whole gallon of oil.

I would heartily reccomend the ferry!
