is it ok to mix a petroleum based synthetic with standard oil , say if you are down a half a quart .

Depends on what you mean by "mix" I suppose. You can pour the two together, but will it emulsify?

it will not emulsify (at least, dino and synth-based motor oils don't -- can't comment on other applications)

yes you can... just about every oil maker out there has a semi-syn oil...

It's been accepted for years that you can mix synthetic oils with conventional oils. Unless you disassemble and clean your engine, you are always mixing synthetic with conventional oil when you switch over.
