Best system ever... Hand signals. Point at tank for gas stop. Point at mouth for food stop. Point at crotch for bathroom stop. Pat top of helmet to notify others of a LEO. Cheap and easy to lean |

My wife and i tried the latest "chatterbox" last year. When starting out it would work super. We had some fun conversations.BUT,it didn't take long before we'd lose communication, and then it became extremely frustrating trying to communicate.TOO bad as we've reverted to the hand signals just above.\imagelink2 {http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/clipart/sad.gif,: (} Oh yeah, communication provided by the Chatterbox(when working) added SAFETY.Double TOO bad (Message edited by ducxl on April 16, 2006) |

JT - I would also do some research over at www.concours.org or www.sport-touring.net I know I've seen a whole slew of topics on the subject at one time or another. |

Ducxl - was it the FRS, or GMRS based bike to bike you were using ( chatterbox X1, or x2?) I'm currently spec'ing out an intercom / sound / vehicle to vehicle setup for when my Xb9 arrives, and the chatterbox is one of the few I can get locally, so I'm VERY intersted in other people's take on the unit. how good is the helmet to helmet intercom in real world use? Have you been using the chatterbox to pipe in MP3/sat radio/nav instructions? were you using ptt, or VOX for the vehicle to vehicle? (2 sec delay on the vox is a real PITA with most frs/gmrs) From prior experience, GMRS is WAY better than FRS for range, and clarity - albeit, my handhelds are GMRS high power units with 5 watt output.worst case, I might just strip those units down to components, and mount them inside the jaw-bars on my helmets ( full face)...but that still wont give me tunes, and I'd have to deal with wait to talk, and one-at-a-time com. thanks for any feedback chris |

huh????/ what????/ i cant hear you.... my exhaust is too loud........ lmao..... but seriously.... i used the chatterbox for a while, and it was pretty good, except that when speeds get up over 100mph (i will not confirm, nor deny i've gone that fast or a lot faster) its alot of wind drag hanging on the side of your helmet.... |

Company called Starfox makes a throat mic like you see in the movies on spec ops shows. Dual mic for excellent pick up sits on both sides of your voice box. Tube style (hollow flexible) ear pieces fit well under your helmet. The dual mic is specific for motorsports use. Just plug into your hand held radio and use the remote PTT button you can hook on you finger for easy access. Saw some handhelds with a 12 MILE range at the store the other day, $99 for two radios with chargers and batteries. $49 for the throat mic. Cool beans. I have an early model single sided mic, doesn't work as well for on the bike, has an earbud style earpiece with a hook for your ear. I'll try and find their web site or you can see them at the Sportsman's Warehouse. -Mike |

Nice for hunting too since they pick up your voice at your voice box you can transmit while talking quietly... |

concur with spidey -- with the minor caveat that, if you are riding with persons other than male, pointing at yer crotch may transmit unintended information ;-} |

Would like for them to come out with Bluetooth headsets for bike to bike communication. Cataract2... Bluetooth is designed for very low power use, and the transmission range is about 30ft max. |

autocomamerica.com They have all kinds of different accessories/adapters. The site is kind of confusing at first, but it's all there, somewhere. Looks like they are going to release some new products soon, too. |

If you want a system that really works, look at collett communicators. You get what you pay for with this kind of equipment. Mine work flawlessly, even with loud exhaust and wind. They don't need a push to talk button, because the vox actually works. And in a pinch, you can load them with regular AA batteries. |

I'm in the same camp as Spidey, Tramp & Bomber. When I'm riding the last thing I want to hear is people yapping in my ear. |

Is that what pointing at your crotch means? On a trip my buddy kept pointing at his and I thought that he wanted sex! Since I was the only one around, there was no way I was going to stop! |

Well ours is the Chatterbox "FRS" and we utilized the "VOX"(voice activated) feature. Could've had better success with the "PTT" buttons but that would've been too cumbersome....It was fun being able to talk to my wife while we rode. But the performance faded too quickly. Nowadays we stick to the common hand signals. |

Jersey_Thunder I just went to the autocom site, but cant see one important piece of information there - what frequencies do the Autocom units function on? bike to bike ( or bike to car/truck) is great, but only if its a frequency everyone you're likely to ride with has access to!! c. |

The Autocom is NOT a radio. It's a rider to pillion intercom, and an audio switching device and you add your radio of choice to the system. You can use GMRS or FRS and the Autocom also acts as a fancy signal switching device so you can plug multiple audio devices in at one time and it switches the audio you hear based on priority, for example the signal from the radar detector overrides the music audio source. |
