I understand that this board is world wide, but it seems like the most knowledgeable bunch of Buell riders posting on the web that I've found.

Do any of the local clubs (or individuals) host Tech Days? A bunch of riders getting together and wrenchin' on their bikes, helping with maintenance, upgrades, etc.?

On one hand, I'm embarrassed for asking because I don't have the facilities myself to work on a bike (at least the condo rules state no engine work in the parking lot) and reciprocate the offer to host, but on the other hand I'd prefer to learn the ins and outs of my bike from someone with a little more knowledge than myself.

Thanks

That is one helluva idea..

I'm sure Buellistic could host a whole semester on wrenchin tube frames.

I used to do that every once in a while here in my area...

TPS re-sets, fluid changes and suspension set ups...

we do that from time to time in Chicago, as well (well, scheduled often, actually happened once)

don't be embarassed to admint you don't know something, bud -- no shame in not knowing at all --

check the Storm Fronts section for your local BRAGsters (and others) --

I've also heard of a few dealerships that host these kind of events . . . .

Don't be afraid of the condo rules.

Those rules are in place to keep people from putting '79 El Caminos on blocks in the parking lot. Not that there's anything wrong with '79 Elkies.

I kept a '71 VW bus on the road by working on it in my apartment's parking lot - same rule as your condo. And I spent hours and hours tearing bodywork off the M2 in another apartment's parking lot. Same rules, again. It's my experience that the car-working rule is very selectively enforced.

The biggest bummer is carrying your tools all the way down to the bike.

The Offishul-Buell-Tech-Manual is pretty good, too.

It is a really good idea - At some of the few BRAG events that I managed to attend at Glendale H-D, they had time devoted to wrenching, suspension, tires, etc, and I found it to be very informative.
If any of you master mechanic-types want, you are welcome to come to my place and help clean my garage and work on my RS! I'm looking for someone that can fine tune it's resale value up about 4G.

The other non-buell bike club I belong to, albeit more localized than this web forum, has these about every other month between March and November. But BMW riders are notoriously cheap. As the old adage goes, What's the cheapest thing on a BMW bike... The Rider.

I'm in Columbia, MD which is about 20 minutes SW of Baltimore and 40 minutes north of DC. Anyone on the board from those parts?

DCBRAG, based in HD/Buell of Ft. Washington, MD, has done "wrenching" days in the past.

We will do more this year, we just need to set a time/day/place.

If want to brave the wind/cold then ride down to HD/Buell of Ft Washington today for the DCBRAG meeting, 10 am with a ride to follow. We can talk about stuff there.

Thanks!

I just got done doing the base gaskets on my S2 - last night! I took some pictures along the way to show some others what some of the inner workings of their bikes look like. Here are but just a few.

Carbon on piston:

After scraping piston with gasket scraper and razor blade:

Piston after Scotchbrite:

Note: This T-Storm piston has 70,000 miles on it, and most of those miles have been put on with the 'bad for T-Storm engines' 6R12 plugs...

Not sure if using a scraper/blade then scotchbrite was the best of ideas. I know that when I did mine, I took the caps, masked off the side skirts and ring area then bead blasted just the top to remove the carbon. This kept any scratches off the piston face. just my .02, not sure if the scraping method hurt or not, just scary.

Jose, when I get these bikes out of the garage and it gets a little warmer, I'm up for hosting another wrenching session. I just don't want it to be my bike this time... We just need a volunteer to be torn down for the show.
