I'm sure most of you have noticed, at least once a month or so, someone new posts a question on the board wondering about how reliable Buells are. There has to be some stats somewhere showing where Buell stands in relationship to all other Motorcycle companies. Does anyone know where to find this stuff? I've been searching the Internet like mad and I can't find anything.

Dealership managers can see it, I had access to it when I was with Buell/H-D.

my understanding is that JD Powers DOES rate bikes, but that the manufacuturers who pay for the ratings have decided not to use the data in advertising

no idea why that might be the case

I am not aware of ANY data from the manufacuturers on defect rates etc.

This goes for cars also.

Without this, I don't know how you truly rate a bike's "reliability."

All you get is anecdote and opinion.

To wit, everyone loves Honda's reliability but where is the data?

I'm in my 3rd week as a paperwork guy at a dealership and I follow bikes through the warranty process. Out of maybe 20 claims there have been 2 Buells. First it was an XB12X with one mile on the odo, the dealer the guy bought it from never set it up or test rode it and it had plugs so fouled that it would not start. The second bike was an XB12R and the belt guard had rubbed on the rear sprocket/belt slightly, this was in and out on a day I had off.

I have heard of a few that came in with fouled plugs. I am told the bikes can foul plugs if they are never revved up much and only used for very short trips. This may be speculation on the part of my coworkers, but they are all very knowledgeable mechanically. I tell them that I have never heard of this and they say that I and the folks I know must take them out and ride them.

I have looked for some dealer resource regarding reliability #’s and I have not found anything, but I could be looking in the wrong spot.

My experience is that they are very reliable.

Bruce, JD power rates cars in problems per 100 cars. Both in intial quality and long term quality. Also rate dealer satifaction.

The study finds that Japanese manufacturers continue to build higher-quality bikes; however, consumers generally report greater levels of satisfaction with the overall comfort, design and performance of bikes built by domestic and European manufacturers.

Consumers continue to report that style and design are the most important elements of their purchase decision when considering a specific bike, followed by the brand name and the bike’s performance and handling.

Sorry I was not clear enough.

I don't believe that there is any place to go to get the MANUFACTURER"S data on warranty repairs. These guys do NOT give this out.

As you pointed out, we do have customer provided data from JD Powers. While there MAY be a high correlation between these two data sets, there may NOT be.

I don't think we will ever know.

Food for thought!

Roc, I had the '04 XB12R which kept fouling plugs and it was mostly because I would hit the starter and immediately hit the throttle and it kept fouling. To test it, I had the dealer send my bike out with service guys and they didn't have a lick of trouble with the plugs. I rode it in the spring and didn't have a trouble one.
