I was looking to get the Scorp SYN's from the SX but they are only available in a 180 rear and of course I need a 170... SO All you tuber's out there, What tire you run? What milage you get out of them? And How do they feel in cornering? Thanks, Spidey | ||

I put on a set of Michelin Pilot Roads last change (~1500 miles ago). Not sure if the rear is available in a 170 or not; I have PM wheels so I went to a 180. The turn-in feels a lot different than the OEM Dunlops (can't really say better or worse, just very different). Traction, wet & dry seems to be notably better than the Dunlops. Wear looks very good so far. | ||

Spidey,I have used near every brand on my S-2 and have liked em all.Had Pirelli,Avon,Michelin,Bridgestone,Dunlop 205,207,220,never a Metzler as they are just too high priced.Who am I forgetting?? I don't look for a tire to do track days but I have been known to burn up some curves(right,Ferris??) and a bunch of commuting. | ||

I have liked Metzeler M-1 Sportec the best, and get about the best wear, too, of 30,000 miles of testing. I get close to 4500 miles a set out of M-1's, 207's gave me about 1500 miles, 205's 5000, but the last 1000 miles were scary. Old pilot sports 3000 very crappy miles, good traction but very poor handling, bike ran dangerously wide on exits, slippery when cold. Don't know about the new micchelin, though. Liked avons a lot, haven't tried the new type, as last 3 sets have been M's, and one set of Diablo, wore out about 500 miles sooner than m1's, poorer handling feel.Still a good tire, though. I use Pirelli Diablo's on my S1W, and S2, and Michelin Pilots on the other S2. I think I like the Diablo's the best. Shame they don't make the Sync's in 170 I really like them on my SX. | ||

Spidy, Are the Uly type tires available in 170 sizes? Don't laugh, I'll bet they're plenty capable for most street riders. The cool thing about dually-bike type tires is that they almost all work better in the wet than street type tires. I thought maybe I was imagining things until I told a road racer buddy about my suspicions. He told me a kid used to clean up in the wet in Calgary running Pirelli Dual sport tires in the 600 races. Go figgur.... | ||

I have run 170 & 180 on the stock cast wheels of my M2. I have 180 on it now. I run Dunlops D207 on the front and D205 on the rear. The combination is actually great. The bike's handling is very well balanced and the sport touring rear tire last longer than than a pure sport tire. The original owner noted 9000 miles on a rear tire, but I've only manage between 5200-5700 miles. Compare that to the D616s on the Uly which I need to replace my first rear tire at 3200 miles says it all. | ||

I went with Metzeler Z4s then Z6s. Good grip, great wear. I put 8000miles and 2 track days on the rear Z6 on my FJR. The RS likes 'em too. But I put M1 SportTecs on the S1 when I had it. Better grip but less miles. Fair trade. I'm trying Dunlop Qualifiers next. Maybe those for summer/track days and Z6s for the rest of the year. | ||

Spidey, the pilot roads come in the right sizes ( I have them on a X1 with castalloys). They're a nice tire you can take it right to the edge comfortably, good wear, and they work well in the rain. The only thing I didn't like is there is a lot of indication of front lockup on a dry road. The dunlops made some noise right before lockup, the michelin went straight to lockup, but didn't do anything weird, I released the brake and kept on going. I like the dunlops (207/208s), just didn't like changing tires every 3/4 k miles. I'm trying the Z6s when the temp gets above 40 around here (mounted and ready to go). The new dunlop will be interesting when they come out. The Firemanjim says, all the tires work well, just depends on how much you ride in the rain and how often you want to change them | ||

Dunlop D205s have worked good for me under all riding conditions inc a couple of track days (I wouldn't use them on my XB12R) but for my tubers, mileage, handling, and price all come together in the D205. | ||

If you want not just a tire for senior citizens, but one for little old ladies, the Metzler marathon 880s come in Tuber sizes. I haven't tested grip leaned over all the way to the sidewalls, but they seem sticky enough though the front responds a bit slower than the sportbike tires. Wear is the Marathon's strong point, and it's the only tire I've ever seen last 15,000 miles on my Tuber- the rest are lucky to make it to 10k. Your (tire) mileage may vary... | ||

I really like the combo of a Bridgestone BT-020 in the rear and a BT-010 in the front. It totally changed my opinion of my S2. My M2 will get the same treatment as soon as my current D220's are shot. Brad | ||

My choices (in order) would be 180 Scorp, or the 170 MeZ6/MeZ4. The handling difference of a 180 tire on the 170 rim is not as significant as the difference between say a D205 and a MeZ6. The profile of the native tire, and I suspect even of just normal wear, varies more then the distortion caused by a 180 tire on a 170 rim (IMHO). | ||

I find that milage depends on the type of road you use. pave (concret) will give 20 to 30% more milage than black top. The crushed rock will eat them away very fast. I have ran 180s for the last 9 or 10 tire changes.The metzler works best for me. | ||

I'll 2nd or 3rd the Metzeler recommendations. I've had MeZ4 on both the S2, the S3 and the SV650. The SV and the S3 did track day duty on those tires without concerns about traction. Now the Z6 promises to improve on traction while retaining wear rate. I'm going with those for the S2 next. I've used the Sportecs on the SV for the last 2-3 seasons for track days mostly. Dunlops, 205/207 the very worse for mileage -- we have no straight roads once you're off the slab. I'd never pay my own money for them. Pilots, best mileage I've seen if you're constantly in the twisties and we are. They like to be plugged too :-) BT20, super for slabbing, but the front doesn't have the adhesive feel I like and they warm up slowly, but will put down some stupid mileage numbers. I've still got the Avons on my list for next time. G2 | ||

I'm with Bluzm2 on this one, I prefer Bridgestones too. I like the dual compound thing, sticky on the edges, long lasting in the middle. | ||

7,200 miles on my last set of Metzler Z6's.Good ride,nice transition from side to side.They don't give up much grip to the M1 Sportechs.Good for Battle Trax or the North GA. Mountains. | ||

Michelin Pilot Road out back and a Pilot Power up front. Corners great and the rear lasts a long time. I've noted no ill effects in handling with the two different tires. | ||

Metzler Sportec on the S1W. The rear has about 3000 miles but that includes 2 track days and 2 trips around Deal's Gap. I still have some "street life" left. I can't remember what I have on the S3T. All I know, I HATE the rear tire compound. Not enough grip. I'll stick to sport tire instead of sport touring tires fron now on. | ||

I run the Michelin roads all around and have consistently gotten about 9000 out of the rear and about 12000 out of the front. They come in 170 which is the size I run on an XB for a more rounded profile. Swear by them...sticky and they give you a lot of tread...like 1/4" deep grooves. |
