Mr. Van Halen brought it out into the public eye with the first Van Halen album and is a master at tapping. There area others out there that have also mastered left handed hammer-ons and pull off's while tapping with the right hand on the fret board. Stanley Jordon - Jazz Guitarist, amazing to hear and watch, Les Claypool - Rock Bassist and Joe Satriani - Rock Guitarist to name just a few. |

Isn't there a black guitarist named something Johnson who does a lot of that? I saw him on a TV special of some sort a while back, but have never heard him since. My fault. He blew me away. If anyone knows who I'm talking about, I'd like to know about it. I might blow a few bucks of my next SS check before the boat interferes. |

Friday All this anticipation, awaiting the arrival of the mail-order bride. Let me see, here; there’s such a tangled mess of wires running across this junk-laden desk… Oh, there it is. Let me plug my crystal ball into the USB port. Friday’s the 10th, so… I’ll dial it in for the 17th, and… oh, it’s smart enough; I’ll just use The Thunderdome for location. One week into the honeymoon; this ought to be good… lots of caressing and fondling, beautiful music in the background… Wait a minute. What’s this? The groom’s stomping around the room. He looks angry. He’s shaking his left hand, like it’s in pain, and mumbling to himself. Let me turn the volume up a little bit. What? He just called her a little bitch! I guess the honeymoon’s over. |

Cap...You may be thinking of Stanley Jordan. Check out this video link and see if this is him. Stanley Jordon Its taken me lots of practice Cap to catch those live performances in time. Some nights I am dead on and other nights I have to work my tail off to just get that one cool pic. This last Saturday was one of those tough shoots, had decent lighting but it wasn't as bright as I would have liked it to be and the light guy insisted on messing with me all night long! One day, I hope to make it into Rolling Stone magazine. |

The shots you've posted here, Jim, look to me like you had the lighting guy in your back pocket! Something Johnson? It was definitely Stanley Jordon. But I remember what he was playing as being more melodic. This clip sounds more to me like a demo of the degree of difficulty he has mastered. I can appreciate the technicality of it, but like that line from “Amadeus”… “too many notes.” Maybe the special I saw was a gig he played at the old folk’s home? I don’t think I could handle 45 minutes of this. But I know who to look for now, and maybe I can find something of his that is just a bit more… laid back. Thanks. |

Here's a link with some relevance to the guitar topic: http://www.apple.com/pro/video/obenaus/ Be careful about clicking any of the shop links in the right column - may cause severe damage to your credit card balance. Henrik |

Henrik, that is a VERY cool link, thanks! i was just beginning to check out their DVDs this afternoon when the frikkin' cell phone went off (isn't it just like Court to call at the most inopportune times???), but i'm thinkin' that, short of one their guitars, a DVD on how they build 'em would be a cool attainable-by-mere-mortal substitute. thanks! (that is, thanks i THINK -- i didn't get far enough into their website to see how much the DVDs cost...) FB |

If you need something to talk about, explain to me. . . one lacking "natural rhythm" how to play quarter note triplets. I mean, I'm learning but at the pace of a beach ball being pushing through a pipe filled with cold molasses. Capo = 3rd fret = James Taylor |
