Sandwich a 3" K&N filter between a couple of pieces of sheet aluminum, preferably anodized black. Make your own support brackets out of flat iron. Use a plastic "velocity ring?" from Harley. I could send you some pics of mine but don't have the energy to shrink them to post here.

What ever you do DO NOT use a Sportster ham can. Your knee will be hitting it and it'll drive you freakin' bonkers.

...unless you don't mind the irritation so in that case you can have my old Sporty set-up. Only thirty miles on it before I pulled it off and cursed it's very existence.

I put an S2 air filter with a 3" K&N element on my M2. Had enough leg clearance, and it was a little different from everybody else's bike. It worked well, and the intake roar sounded sweet. I used a metal Sportster cover, powdercoated black, since I couldn't find am original carbon fiber cover. The most expensive part was the K&N element.

I think I saw someone here using a teardrop-shaped S&S only rotated sideways or backwards to fit in the frame.

S&S will fit nicely without rotation -- knockoffs available from the usual suspect HD catalog folks for around 50 cash american -- generally supplied with a foam aircleaner element, which is easily replaced, if desired, with a K&N or other element

if you go that route, make sure you get a Sportster setup -- a big twin model won't fit (no need to guess how I know, is there?)

I know a guy who made his own Forcewinder out of a PVC elbow he got from Home Depot. The only problem is it looks like a PVC elbow from Home Depot.

"The only problem is it looks like a PVC elbow from Home Depot."

That's why they invented krylon.

Got pics of that?

Any complications about using these setups on fuel injected bikes versus carbureted ones? I guess you have to find a hole for the temp sensor- anything else?

I got a teardrop S&S style on my S1.

I'd post a pic but I'm on dialup and it will take forever, OK I'll try and see if it works.

"Got pics of that?"

Now that I look at it again, it may have been some sort of toilet plumbing. Here's a thread featuring said device on a streetfighter Sportster.

The local Harley Retailer had a couple of them for $60.00 Canadian and I added a K&N Filter to it.

What Sportyeric said. I did almost exactly the same and when I made the carb hole and mount holes I moved them back to move the air cleaner forward for knee clearance. I also used an aluminum 5/8 inch spacer as well as the velocity ring to move the air cleaner out for frame clearance. This also adds a little extra plenum which helps air velocity somewhat. Remember to always use the carb bracket from the heads for carb stability and use enough carb gaskets to insure no air leaks between different pieces. I'll look for a picture but the air cleaner is now behind a full fairing so I don't know. Full cost with a 3 inch K&N was under $70.00 Bob

The absolute cheapest method to get rid of the "bread box" is to leave your steering lock on . . .

However, this does nothing to lower the cost of finding a replacement air cleaner.

Use the Helmholtz tube with the holes 'glassed over and a universal K&N cone filter. Just keep the airbox covers removed and you have a $50 Forcewinder.

yes the FW does not have the bunghole for the temp sensor try using the sock elastic for it or buy the xr2 filter it has the hole punched in it.

the bolts for carb and TB appear to be different the OE bolts for the TB are metric, but tap easily to the 1/4 -20 size for the fw
