Okay, here's my first string...

1996 Fender American Standard Telecaster
tele

2004 Takamine EG-334SC Acoustic-Electric
taka

1978 Yamaha FG-331
no 1

The pedigree and value of the Fender and Takamine will insure their future after I can't take care of them anymore. They will continue long after I have left this world.

The Yamaha, my most treasured possession, is only valuable to me. To anyone else, it's just a cheap, laminated guitar worth maybe $75 on a good day. This one, I will take with me.

If there is an afterlife, I may have the time to figure out all the songs I love. If not, at least it'll be with me forever.

That Takamine is the finest guitar I have ever played, btw. I've had my hands on some of the finest acoustic guitars ever made, too. Some guitars just come out better than others. This one is a spectacular example of that. I feel very fortunate to be its caretaker.

All the guitars I posted pics of have incredible stories behind them. It's good thing they can't talk, especially that Yamaha!

Shop Broke: Means you've been around the shop long enough that derogatory comments, name-calling and general slander roll off your back because you know the people slinging the hash really love you at heart.

BadWeB searches: You just never know what you'll find or where you'll find it.

Okay Ferris how did I end up in a guitar thread? : )

Cap -- the set list is, er ehem, zactly what you'd ask for -- with a couple of surprises -- the only thing they DIDN'T do that I woulda loved is Mother's Lament
(I mother was washing
her BAAAaaaaybeee one night!)

but the rest of the set made up fer it, to my mind!

DJ, would love to hear more about your guitars, what makes them special, what makes them special to you, and some "up close and personal" photos of some of the features, a la Hugh's earlier series of his Seagull, would be cool - if'n you've got the time and inclination, that is. : )

Mikej, thanks for the links. "Jerry's Breakdown" is what's gonna happen to me when i finally lay my hands on my new guitar and try to figure out which end is up.

as far as the DVD/book combo you reference, i can't give any first-hand advice, but for a mere $15 i don't see how you could go wrong.

JB2! welcome to our little soirée! : )

"Shop broke"

I like it.

The only thing I could come up with was too broke to get the S1W outta the shop one more (Last) time. But it didn't make sense that Jerry would be glad about that. I might not be shop broke enough to let that sentiment roll off my back.

BadWeB searches: You just never know what you'll find or where you'll find it.

HEY, you sarcastic little knock-kneed fruitcake. You're a big talker sitting behind your keyboard firewall. Hitch up your diapers, pack a couple of spares, and come stand on my back deck and lets see what you have to say.

Yeah. Shop broke!

Okay Ferris how did I end up in a guitar thread?

"DJ, would love to hear more about your guitars, what makes them special, what makes them special to you, and some "up close and personal" photos of some of the features..."

Will do.

I'll tell one quick story about the Yamaha (for now). Back when I was in college, I shared a cheap apartment with 2 other guys in Smyrna, Georgia. We had a huge keg party and all sorts of people crashed it. A bunch of local kids showed up and were having a pretty good time drinking the free beer and trying to act like they belonged there.

One of the kids, he must have only been about 14 or 15 (I was only 20, myself) showed a lot of interest in the guitars we had in the living room. He said he was just learning to play so I handed him the Yamaha and said, "Let's see what you got". He fumbled around with a few chords and but didn't know any real songs.

He seemed like a cool kid so I asked him if he wanted to learn a quick song. He smiled big and and said, "Yeah!". So I played the intro to, "Stairway to Heaven" and showed him how easy it really was. He was amazed that he was able to do it in just a few tries. I told him to keep practicing and he'd be as good as me in no time.

I showed him a few other things and the kid thought it was really cool. I remember he was there with his older brother who was kind of a dick. Before the party was over, I asked him his name. He said, "My name is Rich, Rich Robinson and that's my brother Chris". A couple of hours later after the beer was gone, they left, but not before Rich told me, "Thanks man".

Years later, the brothers formed a band called, "Mr Crow's Garden", which eventually became, "The Black Crows".

Rich Robinson did get a lot better!

More stories later...

Dan, love your Takamine, one very pretty guitar!

A friend of mine who is a bass player (who owns a Buell too) that I have photographed often over the last few years during his performances with his band Mojo Posse has 2 of them that I frequently strum when I am visiting his home. Both are very well balanced, smooth playing guitars and have an absolutely beautiful tone to them.

Mr Corso, Thank you very much sir. FB1 getting his Fast Ferris site up was huge motivator. He and I had been talking about it for years and when he beat me to the punch I couldn't leave it lay any longer. Still a long way to go.

Put me on the list for a Purple Dragon sample CD. I sure wish I could add something meaningful to this guitar thread but all I can say is I'm a huge fan of accomplished guitarists. A good friend of mine who's also one of the best pickers I know plays custom built guitars by Ovation. Awesome sound for an acoustic.

"Dan, love your Takamine, one very pretty guitar!"

Thanks, Jim. It's a better guitar than a player like me deserves. It's a one-in-a-thousand, luck-of-the-draw kind of thing. I am not worthy.

Jeez..., I made myself cry a little...

lol...I know, it just doesn't sound right does it.

I don't have a pic of Jeff Gray playing his Takamine but I do have a pic of Jeff Horton from and old hard rock band called Wild Dogs playing it.

Here is a little bit of info that I found on the web about the band.

Wild Dogs was a heavy metal band from Portland, Oregon, that formed in 1982. A five song demo was quickly recorded which got them a spot on Mike Varney's second compilation album and also led to a 2 album deal with his label Shrapnel. The first show they played with Culprit from Seattle and Mike Varney's own band Cinema. Later on they got to play with Slayer, Metal Church, Myth (a band featuring Geoff Tate on vocals before he joined Queensrÿche), Shadow (featuring Mike McCready before the formation of Pearl Jam), Rail, Randy Hansen, Steeler (one of the first shows Yngwie did in the US), Dio, Girlschool, Laaz Rockit, TKO, Anthrax and Raven. They were even supposed to tour with Metallica on the "Ride The Lightning" tour but their truck was stolen in New York. The band broke up around 1987, reunited for a short time period in 1989 / 1990 and finally a more solid reunion occurred in 1998. Kyle Castronovo is actually Deen's son.

Here is a shot of Jeff Gray on the floor in his studio taken the same night the above photo was taken.

Jeff is reviewing a song list. They all were having a meeting with Barbara Cecil http://www.barbaracecil.com/ who is a Country & Western performer. You can actually see a bunch of my photo's on her site I took during her CD release party.

Yo Dude...It won't be long until that Strat finds its way home to you. : )

Here is a really cool site that I frequent a lot. Lots of good information can be had with some really cool lessons that can be found under the lessons link at the top of the webpage. The other night or should I say morning (long story there but Jerry knows the details) I was going through some of the lesson's and actually picked up a new picking technique that has completly changed my whole style of playing.

ps, what do I need in the way of a guitar to play this someday, eventually, if ever:

Same as them: a six-string acoustic. Martin, Taylor, Loudon, Guild, Griffin, Garrison, Seagull; they’d all do it. They all got plenty of notes in ‘em.

The trick is ordering the right fingers.
