its winter here in nj so i wanted to do a few things to the xb12. now my question to you fellow buellers is should i run the tfi.......all the mods i have are as follows...spec opps pipe and a buell race filter and i've been running this set up for a few months with no problem. and i have had the tfi just never installed it, and some of you guys have had problems with the tfi, if this is in the wrong spot feel free to move it and thanks all ty | ||

No, I had one and got rid of it because tuning without a dyno is a nightmare with it. Also, I would only recommend the TFI unit if you had more mods. For just a filter and pipe the Race ECM is setup for that and will work out of the box (minus a TPS reset) for the bike and the Race ECM will adjust for any other minor changes you make down the road. IE: adding the catch can, open air box, etc. The TFI would be good if you were going for different heads, larger bore, etc. Plus you have to dyno it to get it setup right and for that money you would get more bang for you buck with just the Race ECM and the mods you have already. | ||

Even tuning with a dyno can be a nightmare unless you have a VERY, VERY patient tech helping you. It's nuts how they will turn dials on the TFI and call it a day when the damn Buell system wants time to learn before you can fiddle again. It's not a PowerCommander no matter what the dyno-tech will tell you. quick dyno runs are good for baselining with the TFI it seems, for the average Joe. if you've got a tech that is willing to put in a good afternoon with you to let the Buell system learn while you gently tweak the TFI... you can find success. just don't expect to shell out $100 for a few runs and be good to go. i lost good money that way. lesson learned. | ||

i forgot to add... my OPS pipe ran WAY better with just the stock ECM and K&N. as soon as i added a swiss-cheese inner box and TFI the mix went sour. YMMV. | ||

Even if you had more mods I'd be looking at the "direct link" tuning of the ECM that Al, Terry and Dave have coming on-line. They are starting a database of popular configurations. Stock Uly with micron and k&n makes almost 100rwhp with this set up. To give you a point of reference. Those with more exotic set-ups will need to schedule some dyno time with a trained tech. Just to get a different opinion- I have a race ECM for my XB12, it makes a great ~$200 paper weight. I've tried numerous times with checking the static timing and resetting the TPS, but the race ECM always manages to detune itself after a couple hundred miles and the bike loses the ability to idle. On the other hand, I have my TFi. I never dyno tuned it, just used the baseline settings as recommended from Techlusion and other badwebbers with similar mods. The bike now runs just fine. I can't quote you any power gains, but the bike will now start, idle, and run smoothly all the way to redline without any misfires. | ||

Spike, did you try replacing the Race ECM with another one? By chance yours could have been a bad one. | ||

Cataract- Didn't try replacing the ECM, it was out of warranty before I realized it was defective. I also know of others having the same sort of trouble with race ECMs, so the problem goes beyond my own personal unit. | ||

Hey Tyson! I'd recommend the Race ECM as well. Should compensate nicely with your setup, no tuning headaches involved. Just plug in the new ECM & reset your TPS. Done. Chris |
