...at this stage in the game, I'm settling for a smallish tube amp. Actually, a good set of headphones are more important now than volume. There are enough amplifiers in the local pawn shops to keep any aspiring electrician busy for awhile... |

I think the type of wood does affect the sound. My daughter has a Samick LaSalle Hollow Body Jazz Guitar that came with a hardwood bridge and the gold plated metal one. The Hardwood Bridge give the guitar a much warmer sound compared to the metal one. That Guitar has such rich tones and looks absolutely beautiful. |

"...at this stage in the game, I'm settling for a smallish tube amp. " I got one of these toy Marshall transistor amps as a gift a couple years ago and I'm amazed at how cool it is... I even run stomp-boxes throught this little amp - a TS-9 Tube Screamer boosts the volume trememdously, but you can mess around with feedback without blowing out the room. Course, you gotta pick the amp up and run it over the pick-ups, not the other (and much cooler) way around. |

You are opening a whole can of worms when it comes to type of wood used on electric guitars. Some players feel that softer, lighter wood has a direct influence on tone. Some players feel that harder, heavier wood helps with sustain. Some players feel that up-to-date harder finishes used on modern electric guitars have a bad influence on tone. Then there is the type of wood used for fretboards, maple and rosewood, or ebony on high end axes. There are some good websites to give you some info on the subject. These guys make very high quality guitar parts of REALLY nice wood, mostly for Fender-style guitars: http://www.warmoth.com/ and have a good discussion on body wood types and the effect on tone (and appearance and weight!): http://www.warmoth.com/guitar/options/options_bodywoods.cfm I have a Fender Tele copy I built using a Warmoth birdseye maple Strat neck (a lefty I picked up cheap at a guitar show). I made the body from some curly poplar that my father-in-law acquired many years ago. Poplar is generally used only on painted guitar bodies because it's usually not very pretty, but this wood was an exception. It is really amazing looking and made a nice, lightweight, good-sounding guitar. I'll try to post a photo later. I think it's a fair statement that different woods generally have a subtle effect on the sound of an electric guitar. Of course, I've also heard that Eric Johnson claims to be able to hear the difference in different brands of 9V batteries (!!!) in his effects pedals! |

"Of course, I've also heard that Eric Johnson claims to be able to hear the difference in different brands of 9V batteries (!!!) in his effects pedals!" I read that about Johnson, too. I got a chance to see him at, of all places, the Portland Blues Festival last year. I was impressed with his set. He replicates his studio work really well live and also went off on some cool tangents. Buddy Guy was the headliner, btw. He's everything they say he is live. |

Oh, and Buddy Guy played a Telecaster for most of his set! That was so cool. He did air out his polka-dot Strat for few numbers, though. |

Jerry - You remember that 35mm SLR camera I was hauling around at Octoberfast. Well now I am up to medium tech (not high tech yet because no cell phone) with the purchase of a Nikon L1 camera. As soon as I can download some pictures I'll send them. I enjoy watching someone else spend money. Nice job! At least you are getting a lot of good opinions here. When I was first learning I borrowed my brothers guitar and learned my chords out of piano books that also had chord charts in it. One day my friend and I were down in LA and walked into a guitar store and when the salesman walked over to ask if I can help anyone, my buddy just points at me and tells the guy "He is looking for a guitar." My friend walks away leaving me with the salesman who pulls down a $10,000 Martin acoustic. I held it in my hands long enough to see the price tag and told him not even close, but nice try. |

Bertman, great story! did you at least strum a chord or two? what on earth could drive the price of an acoustic guitar up to ten large??? post your pix here if you can, i think it'd be cool for some of the regulars on this thread to show off their guitars, acoustic, electric or otherwise. (Newf, your daughter's jazz guitar is GORGEOUS!) i committed over the phone this afternoon to buy the Garrison G-25 i've mentioned several times. i can't finalize the deal until next payday, but i'll post some pix when it moves in with me 'n D. The black Schecter C1 Plus XXX is mine, the Ibanez bass belongs to our oldest Josh, the Cort electric belongs to our middle son Kyle, the Classical belongs to my wife Shel and the six string steel stringed acoustic is also mine. Just bought all new strings for them yesterday and today so its time to start the process! |

The top picture is my 1981 Stratocaster and 1994 Les Paul Studio. At the time, the L.P. was #79 of 200 limited production units made just for Guitar Center. I'm sure they have made more like it since. So is it worth anything, who knows - who cares. It is pretty in person though. Side note - I almost destroyed the L.P. in an extremely drunken stupor at a 25th anniversary Woodstock party playing "air guitar" with it. Bottom picture is 1973 Guild D25M. Solid Mahogany top and sides that I bought from my brother. And my always changing, pieced together Frankenstrat guitar. More guitars please! Where is yours Jerry? |

I played bass in jazz band all through school and with a few other guys at times. I picked up an acoustic a few years back too. They are all still in PA, never had time to pack them with me nor the time to play much when I was doing the whole college thing. I'm far from a good player, but still have fun (assuming I remember how to play...) Suppose Mom and Dad are going to be mailing me a package or two...
