I'm a music nut, so at the end of the year I like to look back at what my favorite album was from the previous year. What album did you discover this last year that blew you away? Given the range of life experience, location, culture and personality on the board I'm guessing the range will be amazing and I always love to learn about new artists.

For me the top 3 were:

1) Wolf Parade -- Apologies to the Queen Mary
2) Spoon -- Gimme Fiction
3) My Morning Jacket - Z

Best Riding Disc of the year was:
SOAD -- Mezmerize (Ride the speed limit to BYOB I dare you)

I discovered this unsigned band out of Lawrence, Kansas called Trucker. Their album is available at www.truckerrocks.com You can hear samples of their tunes.

Kind of a cross between some Husker Du, REM, Counting Crows with a little bit of country thrown in.

I really like it and wish they'd get some more music out.

The Dresden Dolls are great! There really isn't anyone like them out there. Roadrunner Records just picked them up.

2005 was a great year for metal fans. Here is my top four.

Arcturus - Sideshow Symphonies
Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor
Arsis - A Celebration of Guilt
Non Human Level - S/T

jlb --

Trucker sounds cool, I'm going to have to pick up that disc, thanks. Some of their sound reminds me of Whiskeytown. That first track on the website, 1995, sounds like nirvana (intentionally I think)

socal--

I hear you on BRMC that was a great disc. What style of music is Dresden Dolls?

Since I didn't include any commentary in mine either:

1) Wolf Parade -- Apologies to the Queen Mary (If you like Modest Mouse you'd probably like this)
2) Spoon -- Gimme Fiction (Tight, lean, spare alt rock. Austin band, great live as well. Good performance recently on Austin City Limits.)

3) My Morning Jacket - Z (A little bit of everything, used to be more countryish.)

Teskeptic-

Dresden Dolls are a duet from Boston. A girl on the piano/singer and a guy on the drums. The drummer is amazing and they are 10x better live than on disc. They describe themselves as Punk Cabaret. Check them out there are a few videos and mp3s on their website www.dresdendolls.com

SocalBueller - will check that out it sounds interesting.

TcSkeptic - tell me a little more about Whiskeytown. At face value I already like the name.

Also, what is BRMC all about?

Whiskeytown was Ryan Adams band before he decided to suck. They are alt-country, with a touch of punk and no longer exist. Their album Strangers Almanac was their masterpiece, and I think holds up really well.

BRMC -- I think could best be described as throwback rock and roll. They sound like a band from an earlier era, but I'm not sure when. They have a bunch of different sounds, but are fairly straight ahead.

A couple of tracks off of howl can be heard here:

http://www.blackrebelmotorcycleclub.com/howl/

My Morning Jacket has two tracks available streaming including my favorite "Off The Record" here:

http://www.mymorningjacket.com/news.html

Wolf Parade here:

http://www.subpop.com/bands/wolf_parade/apologies/

But you have to scroll all the way to the right.

Socal--

I downloaded the Dresden Dolls tracks. THANKS! Another kickass suggestion that I would never have found by myself. I have no idea what they mean by Punk Cabaret, but they are really good.

OK, this is cool. Put in a song or artist you like and listen to suggestions of similar music.

Marah sounds great. Is "If you didn't laugh" their best album to start with? They have a bunch...

Scep,
personally I'd start with either 20,000 Streets Under the Sky or Kids in Philly. I like and even love "laugh" a lot in spots, esp. "Walt Whitman Bridge", but Kids and 20,000 are better albums start to finish.
Here's a hint - go to emusic.com and sign up for an account - you get 50 free downloads before you have to start paying for the service, and they have the entire Marah catalog available in mp3 format.

I liked the White Stripes - Get Behind me Satan.

Going to go and check out some of the above songs. Thanks for some new (and unknown to me) suggestions.

Matisyahu- "Live At Stubb's"
Definitely the best (& only) Hasidic Reggae/ Dubreggae artist I've ever heard.
His track "King Without A Crown" absolutely rocks...
Google this buffalo hunter*, with the title of the song 'king without a crown', and listen to a sample.
Guy absolutely rocks.... whether or not you're religious, you might just dig this cat
(* local monniker for hasidim )

Tramp- I might be going to see Matisyahu at The Avalon in Boston. I hear he puts on a hell of a show. He does his entire set in the traditional Hasidic Jewish garb. He rocks.

The Magic Numbers are probably my best new band of 05.

Just yesterday they were nominated for Best Newcomers at the Brit Awards.

They had a hit single over here 'Love Me Like You'.

Based in London, their singer hails from Trinidad via New York.

What about the acoustic album that GodSmack put out. "The Other Side". Now that is some serious acoustic rock.

I know damn few contemporary artists.
The CD that I bought in 2005 that I most enjoy is Forever Changes by Love. It was released around 1968, but it still kicks a**.

crusty, that's my favourite album of all time, hands down.
by a long shot.
you'll probably like their debut album as well.
'alone again or' was a seminal piece for much of the music of the next 4 decades. goinbg out and seeing love play at the whiskey-a-go-go several nights a week is what encouraged jim morrison to start a band, and arthur lee of love got them their shot at playing the whiskey, and in signing with elektra.
'forever changes'...
my vote for greatest album of all time.
what prompted you , last year, to check that one out?

I first heard the album in May of 1969 in Albuquerque, NM and fell in love with it. I have it on vinyl and on a cassette, and I just decided to buy the remastered CD with all the bonus tracks. I only saw Love play once, at the Boston Tea Party in 1970. They were magnificent.
It's one of two CDs that I bought last year, so I thought I'd stick it up here.
