You know, Tramp, I say a ton of smart stuff, I agree, but every time somebody says something, you have to say something to discredit it. Did I say i was an expert on ice thickness? By looking at your picture which I 5 starred, you look like a pretty nice person, I met you in New York and I still thought you were a nice person, but the more I correspond with you, I find out what kind of a pompous, know-it-all, loud mouth you really are and it will be just a matter of time before more people are gonna find out what kind of guy you really are. I am not running around trying to discredit you, I just said that I wouldn't walk on that ice, hell, I wouldn't walk on that ice if it was covered in snow and "looked", in person, like you could drive a Mack truck over it, so lighten up and quit being a jackass.

???
lighten up- saying it "doesn't look that thick"
is blindly criticizing my judgement. Obviously, it's mistaken criticicsm, as i'm here, safe and sound.
nice try at turning it around though.
not sure why my character's suddenly being questioned- posted by cochise:
"I find out what kind of a pompous, know-it-all, loud mouth you really are and it will be just a matter of time before more people are gonna find out what kind of guy you really are."
not sure why that little gem entered the thread. No call for that.
that's what dishonest people stoop to in order to discredit folks who know something about their shady business dealings
Can't I even post a happy, fun thread about fishing without being criticized and second-guessed?
take it outside, this thread's about fishin'

Nice pics, thanks.

I'm of the school of paranoia that says if a pickup truck can drive on it I'll still stay close to shore, but that's just me. Of course there's been days in the past that I've ventured out on ice that you didn't need an auger to punch a hole thru, usually just a good kick with your boot heal, but lately I prefer swimming in the summer.

Post more pics please, no matter how thick the ice is. And get at least one with your bike in it. ;)

d-bird- i slammed noone. i posted a fun thread about icefishing and, of course, the usual suspect had to slam my judgement.
when i pointed out that you can't tell ice thickness from a photo, i got called a jackass.
nice try d-bird, but you've got it reversed, and it's alittle different than you and your buddy having signature lines that make disparaging statements about others.
if you want to continue this nonesense, start another thread.... i'll play.
just take it somehwere else, i'm trying to talk about fishing, here.

mikej-
will do.
i've never gone through in all of my over 4 decades of walking on frozen lakes.
more people die of motorcycle accidents each year than from drowning in frozen lakes.
i'm not going to stop riding motorcycles, why would i avoid my lake?
i'm glad there are so many 'fraidy-cats out there, though-
more fish for me

One inch of good solid, clear ice will support about 100 pounds per square inch. I heard this a long time ago, so anyone is free to debate this. I'm sure a quick google search will get me the answer, but I'm being lazy.

As a general rule, I don't go out on the ice until there is at least 3 inches of clear ice. Ice is surprisingly strong.

Those pictures are great and really show how cold it is. Many years ago while I was living in Southern California, I got a little home sick for New England. I thought about taking a few weeks and going back in mid-winter.

A friend gave me a reality check. It was pointed out to me that I would have to spend hundreds of dollars to go to Rhode Island to freeze. It was mentioned that all I had to really do was go to the Safeway Market and give the meat manager about $20.00 and he would let me stand in the freezer all day long.

It does look like fun. Reminds of that movie "Grumpy Old Men.

growing up I used to skate the rivers near my house, 1 1/2" was usually thick enough but we would try to wait until most of it was 2" being that it was a river there are many open spots, which we would just skate or walk around. The thinner the ice means it usually more clear, creating for good fun chasing/viewing fish as they can't seem to figure out how they hell a person is doing that. kind of like a glass bottom boat. That ice you're on tramp looks to be fun as it's clear and smooth and is making me wish for some cold/snowless weather...excellent pics...

hey glitch- how about you direct your posts to the source, OK? I'm really trying to discuss icefishing.
i could give two sh*ts if you close this or any post.
all i wanted to do was to post some nice pics of icefishing, and my judgement on ice thickness gets criticized, and i get called a jackass.
close the thread, i could really care less.

The ice in those pics, incidentally, is over 6" thich, as I had to cut my holes with a hatchet, being as i lost the handle to my auger.
trust me, that's good, thick ice

I think a humorously rendered photoshop of Jay and Joe holding hands and ice-fishing might be in order.

Tramp,
You are too mean dude. Uncool. I'd like to think my response would simply have been...

"How can you tell the ice thickness from my photo?"

And, judging by what I can see of the hole, it looks to be at least three inches thick. Pretty sure it is between two to six inches thick.

You look kinda like a good friend of mine. He ain't so mean though.

More photos please.

For sure, He was mean too. But it looks to me like you were mean first in this case. You did pretty much declare him "patently dishonest or deluded with a false sense of divination" did you not?

I think the disconnect might be that you assumed he was criticizing you personally when in fact that might not have been his intention. You might just as well assume that he was implying that you are a wise and brave man expert in the ways of ice.

Like I said, I'd like to think my response would have been a simple "How can you tell the ice thickness from my photo?"

More photos please. That kitty pic with caption is hilarious. : )
