'Chicano" is the bigger of the two terms I couldn't remember. you don't hear that too much anymore, I thought it was a cool and dignified sobriquet for our western latino brothers.... |

another term for someone of this type is "Beaner". Bean called that before! |

beaner isn't a self-titled identifier, though. seems a little derisive. there was a cool, self-given expression like pachuko or something, from which the dissimilarly derisive expression 'chuke' came. |

The dictionary says: 1 entry found for gringo. gringo n : a Latin American (disparaging) term for foreigners (especially Americans and Englishmen) hon·kies, also hon·keys Used as a disparaging term for a white person Everyone has one! BTW-last time I looked, I did not have any western latino brothers! Recently, I heard that a poll revealed that "African Americans" preferred to be referred to as "Black." Ain't life grand when OTHER folks decide what you will be called? This thread is great! I often use 'Jap' as short for Japanese. How is that offensive? Like Brit for British, and Yank for North Americans? So, an air traffic controler sees a Lufhanusa(sp) plane just sitting on the taxiway rather than moving to take off. The air traffic controller keys his mike and asks what is the problem. The pilot replys that they are off one in their passenger count, one short. There is a pause them someone on the open channel says 'have you checked the oven?'. True story |

Had a friend of mine in school, spoke fluent Spanish from Chile, and got poor marks from the teacher because she spoke a different dialect. |

One day, some honky friends of mine were all talking, we were all, honky this, cracker that, cracker this and honky that, and a Black fellow comes over and says, "What's up, Honky's?" SO I say to him, "Ummm, excuse me, we can call each other Honky's but you can't." |

Okay guys, Honkey is an out of date term. The present term is Cracker! Geez white guys! Funny, when I has in High School taking Spanish ll, my teacher was from Spain. He absolutely could not tolerate Puerto Ricans and the way they spoke HIS language. The reason Puerto Ricans do not speak Spanish like Spaniards is that 300 years ago they had a Gay king with a speech impediment. He "lithped" his esses. So since the King could not be wrong, the government mandated that all Spaniards "lithped" like the king. Remember that that the city of San Juan P.R. dated back to 1503, so Puerto Ricans 300 years ago just couldn't make themselves speak like a gay king. I still giggle when I here Spaniards speak. |

Cracker is a very OLD slur. Honkey is a newer version, started in the 70s I believe. Cracker was used against southern folks by the enlightened northern liberals (both white). 4 entries found for cracker. crack·er ( P ) Pronunciation Key (krkr) n. A thin crisp wafer or biscuit, usually made of unsweetened dough. One that cracks, especially: A firecracker. A small cardboard cylinder covered with decorative paper that holds candy or a party favor and pops when a paper strip is pulled at one or both ends and torn. The apparatus used in the cracking of petroleum. One who makes unauthorized use of a computer, especially to tamper with data or programs. Offensive. Used as a disparaging term for a poor white person of the rural, especially southeast United States. Used as a disparaging term for a white person. |

Don't know about cracker being used by any white liberals from the north, Sure heard it a lot when used by blacks when growing up though. Honkey actually was being used in the mid 60's when I heard it being used. I was raised in a poor racially diverse neighborhood and heard about every racial remark about blacks and latinos you could think of, mostly from the blacks and latinos since us white kids were outnumbered a lot of the time. I recently saw the movie "Crash". good movie, would reccommend it. When Martin Luther King was killed or neighborhood high, middle and elementary schools all closed for a day. Don't know if was to honor him or to prevent violence. |

Grumpster -- er, ehem, you're Chicago-based language advisor is correct, and there is absolutley no Bostonian conenction when using the term Beaner -- and he IS a &#(*-#&R$# beaner, to be sure -- he gets to say so, I'm thinkin this thread reminds me of someting a dear departed brother once said -- "fraternaties exist no so much to confer the joy of membership on the few, but to keep the many out" seems like it could pertain to the majority of things discussed on this thread but, what the hey, I'm only a Blockhead -- what could I possibly know? ;-} |

Hi everyone, sorry if I interrupt something , I am new at this forum, but I was surprised about the posting about Spain and Spanish people , Please let me explain as Spanish what we understand here for the different Hispanic naming convention , Spanish or Spaniard (Español): born in Spain. That is easy je je Hispanic (Hispano o Hispano Americano): Born in South or Central America but in countries that were part of the Spanish Crown,(we call the area Hispano-América). The word, (Hispanic) comes from the Latin, the Romans knew the Iberian Peninsula as Hispania (former Carthaginian word, rabbit land) . They organized the peninsula in two provinces (Hipania Ulterior, Hispania Citerior) Latin (Latino o Latino-Americano): The term is used by the Hispanic to name themselves nowadays (at least in Spain). More specific the word was introduce for naming people born in South America, but not in Spanish former colonies (e.g. Brazil, Guayana, Belize...) None of the former are disparaging words for minorities. In Spanish is more the tone you pronounce the word more than the meaning itself. Un saludo |

The more you go down this road, the lighter the topic becomes. My best buddy (who happens to be black) once told me, "Everyone gets to be SOMEBODY'S nigger." I grew up in a largely black housing project. Being white there was VERY interesting indeed! |
