Just wondering, as I am still on my endless quest for shore duty...

One place is Charleston, SC I know kinda where that is...never been though...

And teh Other is Eglin, AFB which is about halfway between Pensacola, and Panama City Fl...

Any input on either area(I know about Panama City though...and have spent a fwe spring breaks there)

Thanks,...

Chase

Chase, if you're in S.C. you're a lot closer to the mountains. There's a bunch of great areas to ride in western S.C. north GA, western N.C. and eastern TN.
All are with in a good day trip.
Florida is flat, all of it.

Chase, I work in Charleston and live about 15 miles away in Summerville. There are lots of decent backroads nearby but no real twisties. The roads here are really better suited to cruisers than sportbikes. It's a good 250 miles to the nearest mountain roads, but that's doable for a full weekend ride. (See my "SC Mountain Ride" report in the "Tales" section.) The Charleston HD/Buell dealer (Lowcountry) is decent. They usually have 4 or 5 Buells in stock and are good about giving test rides. While they don't seem to stock any Buell merchandise or parts, they are good about ordering stuff.

I drove the entire panhandle of Florida earlier this year (I went all the way from Charleston to Gulfport, MS and back) and was surprised to find that there ARE some hills between Pensacola and Panama City. We had to exit the interstate for about 20 miles due to a wreck and the backroads we took were relatively curvy. Based on that brief drive I'd imagine there are some decent backroads in that area of Florida.

OTOH, like Glitch said, it's a LONG way from the panhandle to any real mountains.

If you come to Charleston, give me a hollar. I'll be glad to show you what decent roads there are in the area.

Charleston is a great town. 3 hour to the mountains, 8 hrs to Daytona.
I would do SC.

Caesars Head is in S.C.
It's every bit as good as Deals Gap, only much less famous, hence much less traffic.

Make it simple, if you like curves, avoid Florida.

Thanks all...

Well, just found out, I am staying on sea duty until further notice...they cant find anything, suitable for my skills...in other words, I am aparently over qualed to take a flippin break..

But, I had to select a couple choices,....and..I am out..

Let the rant begin...

Ask me again why I am getting outta the navy as soon as I can...

EDIT: The kid who works for me, got the shore duty...7 years of being deployed damn near non-stop..I need a break....

Sorry for the question turned rant...

I fly a helicopter for a SC company and fly to CHS twice a week. CHS AFB is pretty cool, been going in and out of there since Viet Nam. FL is ok, but it has hurricanes and sharks. Eglin is huge!!!! FL has beaches, SC has beaches. FL has babes, SC has great looking babes. I like it there!!! And nicer housing by far!!!

The Gulf coast of Florida sux. They don't call it the Redneck Riviera for nothing. And it's totally flat in any direction for 6 hours.
