Coming from Ohio, I assume the weather is gonna be kick azz. Of course, you may be the only ones on the roads in bikes. For us locals it will be cold as heck might even get down into the 50's by then.

Troup is just over 20 miles SW of Kilgore. I've ridden by that trike shop before. I know a great BBQ place you really ought to try. Give me a ring when you get into town. My number is on the RAN page.

Mike,

January weather in East Texas is a toss up. It could be as high as 70F or as low as 20F. We'll look for you to leave the cold stuff at home and hope for some warm sunny days.

Any idea where you will be staying? If you enjoy a beer or other alcoholic beverage before/with/after dinner, take note that Rusk and Smith counties are "dry" counties, meaning that you'll not find even beer for sale there. Tyler is in Smith county (dry); Henderson is in Rusk county (dry), Kilgore and Longview are in Gregg county (wet = NOT dry). Some restaurants get around the prohibition (dry) laws by offering "private club memberships".

I'll put a recommended riding roads map together for you if no one else chimes in on that.

Just looking at your maps there Blake, I'm definitely going to have to come by that way sometime. Coffee City! mmmmm...........

I'm hoping to get to see friends in Austin next year, so maybe able to combine.

This is one of the reasons for going, he's the son of one of my best friends.

& yes Texas is BIG, as big as France, I didn't realise this the first time I went, & couldn't understand why it took me so long to get anywhere. I thought the speedo on the car was faulty!

>>>>texas is a BIG state

That's an accurate statement. In 1995 I had a house in Dallas and was driving from Marina del Rey to Dallas. We hit El Paso and the kids shout "we're almost there". To which I reply, "you are barely over half way"...we had another 650 miles to go!

The classic story was L. E. Myers, a large construction company. Chicago world HQ is talking to the El Paso field office. There is a problem on a highline in Texarkana.

Chicago: "Why don't you run over and take a look?"

Texas: "Why don't you? . . you are closer than I am".

It is a HUGE state!

Enjoy !

Steve,
If you are in Dallas, it should be two hours to Kilgore. Speed limit is 70mph on I-20 for most of the way. Still a lot of driving. If you ever have a Saturday free it might be worth meeting up for a track day at OHR though. : ) Keith and I could always use your expert help at the track. : )

I'll see how it goes.

I'd do a 4-hour round trip just to BS a little

Next time, better planning.

Steve,

We could meet up in Tyler, a half hour towards Dallas from Kilgore. Ortega Kid is in DFW now. I bet he'd be good company. : )

Yeah Mike, what is your schedule. Hope we didn't scare you off. : )

I get in at 1235 on 3rd Jan, leave Friday (6th) at 6PM.

Would be easy for me to meet up on the 3rd for late PM/dinner. Friday I am 50/50 on having an AM meeting in Ft Worth area so gotta leave Friday open for now.

I live in the desert so driving a couple hours for dinner is no big deal.

Im not sure about my schedule right now, we leave here on the 7th will be in Troup on the 9th till the 12th (back on the road in the am) and home on the 13th. as of right now i dont know when the "class" gets out. or where we are staying or anything.

How far would a H-D/Buell Dealer be from us?

How are the local Cops and should i be worried about the trailer getting broke into and the bikes getting stolen?

and if anybody does know of some good riding in the area let me know!

thanks, Mike

Lets put it this way, the cops are bored. It's the highway patrol you really have to watch out for, they are relentless.
I doubt crime is a big problem there seeing as everybody knows everybody. You can never be too careful though. Park it where you can see it!
Not too sure about roads to ride, but you will be in some beautiful wooded (Cherokee Nat'l Forest) country to ride.

Mike,

Lone Star in Tyler is just up the road, about 20 miles NE of Troup. You can see Tyler, Texas on the 1st and 2nd maps that I posted above.

Clarification: The red stick-pin shows the location of the Trike facility; it is about six miles west of Troup.
