I would like to buy one but do not know anything about how they function. Can you down load from the net? Do you have to pay for down loads? Can you down load music you have saved to CDs? Any info will help.

What you do is install "itunes" the apple software for teh ipod. It works like Real Player or something like that...you download the songs onto your computer, in itunes, and then transfer the songs on to your ipod. you can put music from CD's, download songs, etc....Both my wife adn I have one...I ONLY listen to mine...haven't heard the radio since. I love it, except now I want to get a 30 gig ipod.

Very easy to use, and nice to have.

I have a subscription at http://www.audible.com that allows me to download two audio books every month. I put them on my iPod and listen to them in the car or when I'm doing any sort of house or yard work.

I bought a 20gig ipod back in July and I love it. There are a number of cool accessories and the one that I like best is the AirClick. It's a wireless remote control that can adjust volume, move forward or backward to the next song, or play or pause the ipod. I mounted it to the handlebars of my Firebolt with a velcro strap and put the ipod in my pocket on shuffle mode. When I get to a song I'm not in the mood for, I click to the next one easily and can adjust the volume to whatever level I like. It's nice.

In terms of downloading music, you're not supposed to download anything you didn't pay for. But some subscription services have a relatively reasonable monthly rate for unlimited downloads and you can always rip from your own cd collection.

As mentioned, I have the 20 gig and am only using about 1/4 of the memory and have 1700 songs. Unfortunately, they are compressed at the highest compression rate, which means smaller file size and lower audio quality. I'm going back and upgrading many of them to higher quality larger files. Also, I managed to load in songs I friggin hate, so I'm taking those off.

I think the Ipod is only compatible with the itunes music store in terms of purchasing downloadable music. Dont think it will work with Napster's subscription service. I would check in to that more if that matters to you. That being said I have 3 ipods and love em. The 40 gig is the one i use the most. Also have a 6gig mini(fiance's) and a 1gig shuffle. I have my whole cd collection on the 40, over 4500 songs with plenty of space to spare. I highly recommend one. Get a case for it cuz they scratch easy.

if its an MP3, it plays on the iPod... no matter the source...

legal, illegal, downloaded from the net, bought from an online service other than Apple's iTunes, ripped from a CD you own at home, ripped from a CD that yer friend owns and lets you borrow.

They are the same as many other MP3 players out there, what sets them appart is the tight integration with iTunes (downloading, playlists) and the great user interface.

I really thought the wireless remote wouldn't be of any use until I read your post, Ghostrider. Since Apple ties you into their support scheme, I'll be buying something other than iPod, though.

Who know how to convert the itunes ACC files for playback on a non Ipod MP3 device? I can't make sense of it. I should have known Apple would be non compatible. Window media player works really well, but can't get the "other type" to play in there.
They all seem to play back in Real Player, but can't sync them to personal device.

From ilounge:

Q: Somehow my computer’s entire iTunes library got erased. Is there a way to transfer my files from the iPod back to the library?

- Walter

A: For various copyright and business reasons, Apple doesn’t provide a simple way for you to transfer your music back from iPod to computer. However, it is possible to accomplish this, either manually or using third-party software. This thread in the iLounge forums explains several methods for getting your music back.
