LaFayette,

I agree. Unfortunately bigotry comes in many forms. I wonder how that old silver hair, Mario Andretti, is doing these days. Last I heard, he was still racing for fun and testing his son's team's cars. Darn silver hair!

Bruce:
Depending on the state, reckless driving charges can have serious concequences.
As a former GA resident reckless driving can be treated as a felony! ,particulary if they decide to throw, racing or evading arrest charges on it!
Did it occouur to any one that they judge may have decided to go easy on the rider for a variety of reasons that are not evident here?

I have ridden in several western states including NEB, the above comments about miles of flat straight roads, yep..sure are.. The locals seemed to be quite content to cover these stretches at a good clip.

Having transited I95 N/S between Lumberton NC and Miami Fl I am convinced that a huge number of peeps, think that the "95" sign is the speed limit, I can't count the number of "exotic" cars that have blown past me, at times on one trip on my bike I was clocking over 100 mph many many times to avoid being run down, each situation is unique

I applaud the judge for doing his job and using his judgement rather than simply following precident,
I don't want to go down that road having lost a house, a large portion of my retirement, and a significant amount of cash due to "precident"

Following precident is more convient than hearing both sides and attempting to get to the truth,

In the above post, the back ground information about the persons and other situational information is lacking so expressing an opinion that may be construed as "foolish"

And as for our "European brethren" I am glad that ya'll post, it is interesting to hear your take on various topics!

Well maby if they would jest open up more places for the squidies to play, there would be less reason to be tempted to play hard on the community roads. There is only one race track close enough to me(2hrs away) and the price is a bit steep(approx $200), all of the track days are mid week? I must work to pay bills.(blue collar working man) Mid week is out of the questin unless I wish to use a sick day, I only get 3 of those a year. Price is to high except for maby once a year, so I play on the streets. I am not into drag racing so I do not know when, where and the price of admition of that type of sporting fun. How ever, every once and awile one must school the dumb cagers in the joys of acceleration, so I play on the streets once again. I also am not realy into stunting though I do like a nice power wheelies and small stoppie every now an again. But where is there even a leagle place for that? So I must play on the streets once again? In conclusion where can a motorcyclest go to burn up some agreshion, get an adrenilin fix, that is both affordable and fit into the presious few hours of leasure time. For me the answer is nowhere, so I play on the streets.

I'll take my chances, I'll risk it all, I'll have my fun or I'll take the fall.

I've lived in Florida practically my whole life, and am old enough to belong to AARP, but the silver haired folks (especially in Volusia where it seems we have a huge number of them with 1 foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel) driving around wearing those hideous "welding" sunglasses are far more dangerous than a motorcyclist going 128+ on a deserted road, at least to ME. Driving around here is kinda like a cameo appearance in "Dawn of the dead" The state of Florida's (reckless) position is if you've got $21.00, you're in the game.
They may be related to Mario, but not likely Andretti.
I agree with the judge, at least in this instance, and that's my 5 cents.

Bruce, motorcycle deaths have been falling in the UK for the last 10 years. In that 10 years big bike sales have been steadily rising since their heyday in the 70's. Bikes have also become more powerful.

Your braking distance argument is ridiculous. My 916 will hit 128mph in the time it takes to let out a good fart, by which time you've traveled about an 8th of a mile from 40mph. If you can't see or anticipate the road ahead for such a good fart, then my friend, you shouldn't be farting at that moment. Otherwise, if all is clear, I see no reckless behaviour in letting that fart rip.

I don't know what you mean about me being a Saab specialist? I'm not the one selling high performance cars with a hypocritical view point. You are.

First off, I would suggest that you have a fart obession. Perhaps, you should get that checked out?

Secondly, it takes about and eight of a mile to stop from 128 MPH. This simply means that when travelling at that speed, with optimal conditions, great eyesight, wonderful reflexes, it takes a ton of time to stop your bike.

So, at that speed, you and anything in your way is likely to suffer a nasty.

As I said above, it matters to me not a wit if you want to kill yourself. Go for it.

I do ask that you go alone however.

128 mph = 187 fps

In WV, 20 mph over the legal limit will (or can) get you a reckless driving charge. That means 45 in a 25 as well as 90 in a 70.

Without knowing ALL the circumstances in this case, I will refain from comment other than to say this;

Regardless of Mr. Carman's (how ironic the name) excuse, he only fuels the fire that ALL motorcyclists are lawbreaking speed demons, always running from the law.

Actions such as Mr. Carmen's are what causes new laws to be enacted or present laws changed.

Frankly, after riding for over 30 yrs. I have no issue with these extreme riders losing their licenses for maybe, forever.

Thats all BULL crappie. The squids that gets caught on acasion speeding/stunting/playing/having fun are NOT the ones giving motorcycling a black eye/bad name. 80 percent of the bikes out there are cruisers/bar hoppers/costoms. With their abnoxish attudes and abrasive behavior,rudeness/confrontational demeaners, if that wasn't bad enough, then they put short/fat pipes on their scoots and disturb as many peaple as one can buy reving the snot out of it, louder than a jet air plane, in the center of towne, tru the Hospital zone, past the tourist trap.(look at me)I'm playing bad boy 1 percenter I bought a life style and its all about me and screw all the good law abiding tax payers. Now tell me who the F*** is ruining motorcycling? Bull crappie.

I can see 128 not being reckless, I have driven across Nebraska and other states like it. In spots you could leave the highway and hardly tell the difference it is so flat.

I would think one could easily go that fast with no traffic. You can see 5 miles down the road so you have lots of time to see and respond to hazards. I can't remember the last time I had a group of school children waiting in the ditch by the side of the road ready to to jump up in front of me ;) That is what it would take in parts of the plains states. No hidden driveways, I can tell where the next driveway is, it is that splotch on the horizon that is a farmhouse 5 miles away. Not much gonna sneak up on you out there so I quess 128 would be well within the limits. Probably far safer than doing 55 on the Stevenson into Chicago.

Actually, I booted the braking distance above. It is more like 1/5 of a mile.

Also, if you back to the definition of reckless, it includes the danger that you put YOURSELF in.

So, in this benign scenario where you "can see for miles" I will wager that seeing and avoiding a

Large pothole

Stone

Branch

Small animal

Etc etc

Is well nigh impossible.

If you want to believe that doing 128 is not reckless, then that is your business. It is also the MAN's business and in general, how do you think he will feel about it.

In regards to who has "society" pissed at Motorcycle riders, my conscience is clear.

I CAN tell you that when I see these MORONS doing wheelies at 70MPH here on the Interstate, I do think how much fun it would be to see them go down on there squidley asses.

Bruce you're a dick head man. People with your attitude should be banned from motorcycles for life. It sickens me that I have to share my passion with people like you.

Guess what. I've been riding bikes since my early teens. That's more than thirty years, and I'll tell you something just in case you didn't notice, I'M ALIVE AND HERE TO TELL THE TALES. Many of those tales involve SPEED. I'd also wager that speed is one of the major factors which draws people to motorcycles.

If I die because of speed I won't be the first, nor the last, but I could be if people like you spout off their anti-speeding propaganda and the legislators have their day because of support from do-gooders like you. That day might be closer than you think. Already on trial in the UK by police motorcyclists is a chip placed in the number plate that 'talks' to beacons placed at the roadside. Satellites track your every move, and speed, and that could lead to prosecution for speeding, if you are, without ever seeing a cop or passing a speed camera at any time, day or night on any road.

If speeding offends you might I respectfully suggest you post your opinions on an appropriate bulletin board and not a motorcycle board where your comments might infuriate other members. One more thing. Get a life - a life in the fast lane.

Plummeting into a group of school children at any speed is undesired. Based on the logic you offered, we should consider any speed to be criminal.

However, I will concede that speeding in a place where children (or any pedestrians for that matter) are likely to be present should be punishable by law.

I will try to take this one at a time. However, I will say that very few of you take the time to actually read what was said and think about it.

So be it.

Rocket,

It is clear that you cannot stay on point and that you cannot interact without name calling.

Nuff said.

To reiterate, I simply said that I considered riding 128MPH on a legal road to be reckless. I cited the definition of reckless and cited the reasons that I felt doing 128 met that definition.

Rocket, if you feel that riding at a speed that requires a fifth of a mile to stop is not reckless, so be it.

The police in most areas would disagree with you but hey, it is (hopefully) only YOUR life, so go risk it if you will, along with your license.

To bad you feel the need to diss anyone who disagrees with you own view of what motorcycles can be. Frankly, riding encompasses many passions. I don't share yours and you are totally pissed.

I have mine and I don't care if you share it with me.

Who is better off?

So, go speed, kill yourself or not. It matters to me not one whit.

As I said earlier, just don' take anyone innocent with you.

Enough said I hope.

Back to your Saabs.

You are right, I am not a "bikein brother" whatever the hell that is. Fortunately, your vote doesn't count out here in the real world, only in your own world.

The state of CA will still license me, as long as I pay the fee and stay below the point total.

Oh man, I feel SO BAD.

Seriously, even if I really wished that these idiots would go down, does it really matter? Do you think my wishing it so has any impact?

Perhaps the real cause of this mythical crash might be doing a wheelie at 70 MPH in the middle of rush hour traffic? Who would be responsible for such as crash, me or the squid?

Maybe, just maybe it would be there own doing!

Just hope they don't take any innocents with them.

No, you have read that correctly. I stand by that statement. Above, I was referring to other comments.

"it's aparent to me that you have something of a double standard,

Your logic is poor. How you got to Hitler is beyond me.

Hey, if Rocket wants to do 128 and he kills himself, that is OK with me. Who am I to get in his way. If I did, he would be pissed. He said so.

"I resent your elitest attitude oh thats allright you don't care.."

You are free to resent my attitude but I still don't care what happens to Rocket, not do I expect that he should care what happens to me.

Bruce. let's be right here. If I speed and something happens whilst doing so that is "stupid and irresponsible" I don't have a problem addressing it or that to myself or anyone else, even a policeman if it came to it, if that speeding something warranted me doing so.

That is however not the basis of our disagreement. You branded 128mph as 'reckless'. You went further, suggesting school children are / were at risk of speeding motorcyclists. You offered some pretty harsh criticism of (people) popping wheelies at 70mph, stating it would be fun if someone doing so were to crash within your view.

You also got personal toward me saying Don't fail to die. I don't want to in any way pay for you lifetime of care in the nursing home.

Buy lots of insurance for your dependents, I don't want to support them either.
Then you repeated similar sentiment toward me with So, go speed, kill yourself or not. It matters to me not one whit.

Whatever I think of you Bruce, death amongst motorcyclists is a shared camaraderie you fail to understand it seems. We've all done stupid things on two wheels. Even the most sensible amongst us. I'm sure there's always going to be another time or more where that will be the case again, but for the very vast majority the world over motorcycling intrinsically builds a safety barrier within our brains once we let the clutch out. It's the art of survival perhaps. That means by pure nature motorcyclists are conscious of the dangers surrounding them whether riding 'normal' or at 70 mph on the rear wheel or 128 mph on both wheels. What is clear to me is that one cannot be branded reckless just by carrying out an act of going fast on a motorcycle, even 128 mph fast, without knowing ALL the circumstances surrounding said activity. I live for speed and I have no desire to die by it, nor kill anyone with it. To suggest I or anyone else speeding is running such a risk offers in my opinion an argument that supports legislation being placed to stop or hinder such activity. It also suggest we are as road users of any motorized vehicle, not responsible enough to be at the controls without being restricted in our activities.

Whatever we disagree on, your death would make me unhappy. But you're still a dick head and deserve all you get in this thread.

Another thing. Anyone selling Porsche's for a living and having an anti-speeding attitude, like yours for example, I find somewhat hypocritical. Porsche owners don't buy Porsche's to take to the track. Not even the one's that wish to drive above the speed limit. That's one car you'd leave to a well honed driver to track due to the quirky placement of the engine. That begs a question. How many Porsche's do you suppose you could sell if Porsche restricted all their models to 55 mph? What this has to do with Saab or speeding though, I don't know.

If I were you Bruce, I'd pop to the hardware shop and buy a shovel, then you can try dig yourself out of the big hole you're stood in.
