Funny thing about the oil industry...

I was driving cab about two weeks ago, that is my job now... ya know... smarta$$ on wheels. I get this guy and his son in my cab. They are all excited because they have never seen snow before. Of course... they are from the middle east. The guy wants me to guess where they are from and I get it right on the first try... Saudi Arabia.

Turns out the guy is a geologist who works for Saudi Armco, the largest oil company in the middle east. He wants me to send him my resume. I'm going to send it soon because I had to get the grad school application done first.

Anyone want to go over to the desert to be my bodyguard?

Char

Probably many among us who have the desire and will.

Probably very very few with the qualifications and experience necessary...

Whatever,

Sunny and I are both materials geeks and we are going to be up at UW/Madison late in January on business - and extending for my Mom's 80th birthday party (in Slinger). Both my parents are UW/Madison alumii. If you're near campus in last week in Jan, give me a shout here, maybe we'll do a lunch or sumptin. Sunny and I are travelling on expense accounts on this one.

Hmmmm.. On the protection gig.. What are we talking about time and budget wise? Even if I can't make it. I'm sure I know a few others that could. (not sure how the wife would take me running off on a gig now that I have a 'stay at home job'. But depending on the place, time frame etc. It could be pretty cool!

Bomber, it's possible Char is unfamiliar with some of the, um, less positive character traits possessed by the folks who are best qualified to serve as rangers.

Of course I, as oil field scum, known raper of the environment and general ne'er-do-well, cannot present an argument that she would find convincing regarding anybody else's shortcomings. You know, the old pot/kettle thing...

Perhaps you could have a go at it?

Thang -- you're status as a mother stabber and father raper has landed you a coveted spot on the Group Dubbya bench, I beleive -- can 8 by 10 gloosies be far behind?

bein cookoo is less than positive? I beg to differ -- when presented with an insane environment, how else can a smart person react but through insanity?

also, Ranger rating refers to one's completion of s training regimine -- when my hair was a different color, and my clothes all matched, there was no such regimine -- it was in the dim time, when the REMF had decided that rangers were not needed --

lastly, pot/kettle also applies to Char referring to another's state as cookoo, I'm thinkin

me, I ain't sayin nuthin ;-}

Anyone needing work in the oil patch should seriously consider eastern MT. 300 rigs currently in operation, w/ an additonal 300-500 more by the end of '06. The biggest problem they're having is finding hands who can pass the pisstest. If you're clean, can stand on two legs and follow orders, you've got a job.

PM me if you're interested I can put you in touch w/ the right folks. Did I mention the starting wage for a worm is $23/hr?

Kiwi,

Just go to www.saudiaramco.com they seem to be serious about their benefits for expatriates...

Myself, I just found out they don't let women drive in Saudi Arabia... that is really freaky if you ask me...

I mean, I knew it was really bad for women, but to not let them drive??? WTF will I do if I ship my Buell over to the desert and then it is illegal to drive the thing!!!

I am pretty sure the only way I would do it is if a close and trusted friend got hired with me and we went over there together...

Otherwise I would be pretty much stuck in the company compound unless I have a male escort.

The other bad thing is that being an American poses some special risk as well... considering we are at war in the region. I would always have a huge target on my back.

I don't think my fears are unfounded... the new thing apparently is to have females be suicide bombers now... so anyone would be suspect.

I wish that one third of the world were not in the dark ages about women's rights... it makes me want to when I think about it.

I am looking at nine months from graduate school full time, I hope.

Char
PS Bomber... the question "which came first the ranger or the cookoo?" is probably a mute point... but six years in and covert in Honduras cannot be a good sign...

I'd stay the F(3 red asterisks here) from Saudia Arabia - ESPECIALLY as a woman. We've had a couple of women at work over there and they said that while the pay was awesome - they'd never do it again.

They pretty much confined themselves to the compound. Even out with males in order to comply with law and custom, they were GLARED at and almost every time their group would be out walking, they'd be pointedly singled out. Didn't happen to the men.

No problems for the women, just a very BLATANT effort to let them know they weren't appreciated there in public.

F(3 red asterisks here)ing primitive

Yeah, I'm not compassionate about some other cultures. I can understand cannibalism better.

Char:

Great to see you here.

I too am preparing to start a most interesting new adventure. I've been called 4 times the last two months to go to the middle east (my specialty is in huge demand, most the skilled persons having gone the way of the buggy whip) but I'm not keen, in my twilight years, of being a target, lowered from a helicopter onto a powerline.

Whatever (so to speak) you decide, enjoy it and smile much.

Rubber,

Just get me a freakin' job in North Carolina will ya !?! I graduated from Duke in 1989 BS Geology... Wisconsin is freakin' cold dude...

I would like to move back down there... what do you do for a living now ???

BTW ... when I was in Morocco I was sick and tired of taking a sponge bath out of a bucket, so as to not people off. So I go down to the river Oued de Dadas and decide to take a little swim... it was July in Pre-Sahara Africa for christ's sake!!!

As soon as I dip in the water some freak of nature shows up and starts to proposition me... my favorite words in arabic? Imshe' or Imshay or leave me alone is the translation I believe.

The little bastard ends up throwing cobbles at me and I only manage to get one lobbed back at him before I scramble up to the Berber's house we are staying with...

I KNOW how intolerable it is to be in Morocco and I suspect that Suadi Arabia is 100 times worse... but for the right price anything is possible.

I must be crazy!!!
