Ok, So recently refreshed my Primary Gasket, Tensioner and Tranny Oil. I filled it with Royal Purple to the required level with the Bike (M2) on a center stand and ther front of the engine jacked up to level out the motor. I filled it per my book to the bottom of the basket. I have put 500+ miles on it since then and it has been streaming a full on bath of oil all over my rear wheel and it has never done this before. I have the vent tubes routed to the rear of the bike. The Oil(head) vent tube is on the left and Tranny on the right as you look at it from the rear. When I stop after a hard ride it has saturated the right side of my fender, swingarm and wheel/tire.

What Gives? Did I blow a gasket? I just got the Oil vent tube to stop leaking by doing the XB Head mod and now this. AAAARRRGGGGG!

yes the crankshaft seal in the primary is allowing engine oil and crankcase pressure in.

Mine went at 42000 miles. I put up with it for a STUPID amount of time. I paid the dealership to fix it and it was under $200 including parts.

Make sure you didn't put too much primary juice in, a little oil can look like a lot of oil when it's splayed all over your tire/belt/undertail...

Oil - The New Armor All

At least you know the fix now Micah. I'm glad to hear you made it home safe with an oil soaked tire like that.

In my case, the rear brake got useless.
I found this out when coming down mount Washington.
That's finally what urged me to get it fixed.

CeeJay may be right.

I overfilled the primary once. In my case it was really messy. Double check the level before you try anything else.

Ok, so at first I thought is was just the Tranny, but now that Nate has me thinking the last time I looked at the oil it wasn't as think as the tranny oil is supposed to be. It has a smoother feel like my Mobil 1.

This brings me to my next question, if I dropp 200 or so to have this fixed what are the chances I am going to have another round of this due to my riding style. I like to run as close to the rev limiter as possible, I run my bike closed to the top all the time. Is it possible I might be hitting a reliability issue with the v-twin. I push my inline 4 all the time with no negative results.

thoughts? Opinions?

I posted in the first part of the message I set it per the book. Is there another way to set the level. Check my previous post and let me know if I filled up to far.

slow -- given the timing of the puking (not at all before replacing the fluid, lots and lots imeediately after), my guess would be that you over-filled the gearbox/primary --

I fill until the level JUST touches the tips of the gear teeth on the basket -- I mean just --

not dissing your skills, but, like I wrote, the timing is a little odd

Sorry - I am a poor reader. You really did it by the book. It does sound like there may be seal-related.

I fill the racebike on level ground so the level just barely touches the chain because at the higher RPM's - it seems to do really well. I run Redline Hi Shok in the racebike primary but change it monthly so I can't help you much there - though I did overfill the primary at the FUSA in Vegas last year and it was really ugly.

I've run Royal Purple in my crankcase but not in my primary. Haven't heard any problems due to using the "non HD-approved" primary stuff.

Slow- One thought on checking the level- if your garage floor is just a little unlevel (bike tilted side-to-side), this could throw off your level considerably.

Seems like the simplest check would be to re-check the primary oil level. If the crankshaft seal is leaking, the oil level should now be too high, right? You could always drain a little out and ride it for a while, then recheck again.

Yep, All solid advice. I just got off the phone with my local HD/Buell service dept. They suggested the same test. Look for increased oil levels in the primary. They stated that if I run the bike at higher revs for extended time periods that the pressure in the case has to go somewhere. They also stated that I could have the start of a crank seal leak and only be leaking the pressure causing the primary fluid to exit through the vent due to the increase in pressure. All valid points I guess. I will check it again this evening and see what I find.

I think you answered your own question and over filled the primary.

You indicated that you put it up on a center stand then jacked up the front to level out the motor.

In all my years owning the Buell I have never filled the primary this way. Maybe thats how you got too much in. I always fill my primary with both wheels on level ground.

Micah,

I second what Bomber, Steve (Slaughter) and Newfie say.

Assuming that having the bike on a rear stand with the engine jacked-up to compensate resulted in the correct attitude of the bike may be not so wise.

How much of that Royal Purple did you pour into the tranny/primary? Do you know?

I put one quart in and it filled it up to slightly over the bottom teeth of the clutch basket with the bike in the position stated.

WOW...glad you posted this! Mine is doing the exact same thing, and I was getting ready to go in after the output shaft seal...maybe I will check the primary level first!
Anyone know about what the crankshaft seal costs?

not expensive, less than $12. New style seal has a spring in it and should be seated with a special tool you buy or fabricate. If your bike is 97 you have the old seal. I think they started using the new ones in 2002.

Total capacity is 32 ounces, but there will always be around 4 ounces that won't drain. The added extra oil also will usually cause difficulties in finding neutral and in shifting into 1st gear while at a stand-still (big clunk and some thrust sometimes).

Micah,

You only fill till the oil touches the very bottom of the clutch spring, not the clutch pack (basket). BIG difference.

The good news is that it's an easy problem to fix. Just remove a few more ounces of tranny oil. Ask my Dad how he knows all about this too. ; )

BTW, unlikely you will differentiate between engine and tranny oil based upon which one is more viscous (thicker feeling). In fact, the tranny oil is actually less viscous oil than the engine oil. See the archives in the KV's "Lubrication" topic for info on why that is. : )

even when properly filled, and not puking duringf normal riding, a day of 90+ mph playing inevidably causes a small amount of puking -- I got in the habit of pulling an oz or two out of the primary b4 track days, and got so I just never quite filled the primary quite as far as the manual suggests -- as Blake states, while the spec may be a specific nnumber of oz, the reality of the situation is that you rarely start with a truly empty primary, and it will self adjust as it sees fit (like the old bag level ;-} )

I think the puking even tho it's filled "correctly" is an artifact that of the sporty nature of hte engine -- riding a sporty on a track day will likely also lead to puking -- they just weren't designe for it, nor, in the beginning, tested for it

of course, now that sporties have Buell motors, they are so much better off, yes?

;-}

Blake is there a drawing of that somewhere here. In my book it shows the bottom of the big circle and it is labled Clutch basket I think. I didn't see a clutch spring on the page. This is out of a 1999 M2 Cyclone Manual.

Bomber, good information.
