won't caustic corrode the pipes?, gunk or some other petrol based solvent sounds less

"aggressive" to the steel.

pipes on the barbie sounds like the Whiley Coyote method LOL

I actually think heat would be your pest bet.
My friend and I used a propane torch on his scooter pipe until it stopped smoking and it did a pretty good job.
We of course took it off the scooter first ; )

OK,

Next Problem,

I took the carbs off once again and set the floats to the max end of the spec.

My right carb is still not shutting off so I guess its the needle valve thats faulty. New kits ordered and on the way. I couldn't determine what jets were in there as the marks on the bottom were tarnished.

The carb was leaking very slightly so I ran the bike again, I had trouble with the cables and took off the tubes from the rear of the carb to the air box, ran the motor with them removed and the bike ran a hell of a lot better, even revved out much nicer. It didn't fall flat on its face as soon as it hit 5500-6000rpm. It now pulls to about 7500-8000 then sputters.

I re-installed the tubes and took out the stock air filter and the bike runs much nicer, checked the plugs and they are a nice grey color.

My question now is :

What kind of filter should I put in there?

Should I rejet a size or two larger?

Toss in a K&N ( I get no kickback ) Make sure the jetting is rich enough!!!! Get a handful of fresh new plugs, bop out to the countryside on the expressway, stop at a rest stop, toss in new plug, run full throttle, kill engine, pull over & check plug. If that's old news to you, good.

RD's WILL melt. Lean is an evil temptress, seductive & deadly. They run with the most power you ever get, right before a piston develops a hole.

One fine calm day, ( in the 80's ) my bud on his Norton Combat Commando & I on my Suzuki GT380 ran hard across a valley in upstate NY. We had just passed a pair of "bikers" on "choppers" as we started down into the valley, and when I looked back as we crested the hill on the other side, a solid 2 lane wide 2 lane high trail of fairly dense smoke filled the road all they way down, across & up. Those were 2 unhappy hog risers down there crossing the flats.
2 strokes ruled! (then they were outlawed )

Yup, K&N, & ditto the piston melting, lean is not good, goes with plug heat range too, so be sure they're the right ones, ting ta ting ting!

look for a book by gordon jennings, don't remember the name exactly, but two stroke tuning was it's subject matter. late 60's/early 70's.
lots of good stuff there. ditto on lean is mean, i've got a couple sets of holed pistons!

Lean=bad #3
I killed my old RM125 that way too. Only in my case, the piston skirt cracked and dropped fun things into the crank.
Flat out in third up a sandpit, it died halfway up and I was going fast enough to coast to the top : )

I think the jets are a tad lean.

I don't think this ran right after the original owner (I'm the second) put the aftermarket pipes on it.

I have a funny feeling thats why it got parked in the shed, under all the old household furniture.

I hope I can find more like that.

I'm gonna keep my eyes on E-Bay for a Jet Kit.

Newf,are they Mikuni carbs,if so jets are available from Sudco.My local shop has buckets of them.

They are indeed Mikunis,

The jets here on the island are about $5.00-$8.00 each.

There is a kit on ebay right now that has them from #130-#210 in 5 increments.

Ends in one day so I am watching.

Can you check on the price for me Jim?
