I just picked up an 84 ironhead sportster. it shakes, it rattles, it stinks and it is loud as heck. I love it!!!

Whoa, brings back great memories. My first Sporty was a '79. That bike was amazing. Longest ride was from SoCal to the rockies and back via back roads. Used to 'commute' year 'round. Rebuilt it once from blue to red. Ended up selling it. Woke up with a major anxiety attack and ended up with a '68 XLCH which is parked in the garage, resting under its 'blankie'.

...AMF had the worst electrical switches. If I remember correctly, Erik Buell had some hand in designing the frame in '79...

Yeah. I gave up with my "run-stop" switch.
It's still on there but it's just a blob of solder inside : ) I also had a bad time with front brake switches crapping out. I went through 4 before I thought to look at the bulb. Lousy thing had TWO filaments for the bright filament!
