Colello Cape Breton Post ALBERT BRIDGE - An international motorcycle race with nearly a century of history will make its way to Cape Breton in September 2006. The Cape Breton Festival of Speed, an international motor sports festival, will host a world-class motorcycle race tied to an event called the Isle of Man TT (Tourist Trophy). The event has taken place on the tiny island of 56,000 people, located in the Irish Sea, for the past 97 years. "They were approached by a committee, including myself and we asked if they had any interest in coming to North America with their event," said Louisbourg native Harold MacKay, director of marketing for the race, who is also at the reins of the fledgling Canadian Elite Hockey League. The island's government puts on the Isle of Man TT each year and jumped on board to bring the race to the international stage. "Over there, motorcycle racing is like hockey to us, it's very important. The guys who win the TT are like the Wayne Gretzky's of the world," said MacKay. Described as the "sister event" of the TT to be held in Cape Breton, Sept. 20-24, 2006, the race will run its course on a 52-kilometre route. The route will run from the Louisbourg Highway at the Hornes Road turnoff, towards Sydney to Morrison Road, through Birch Grove and Port Morien along Highway 255, through Mira Gut and finally, back up Hornes Road for the home stretch. The bikes will go around the route up to six times, depending on the classification of the bikes racing. MacKay, as well as director of safety and track organization Terry Dale, have been meeting with residents this week to discuss concerns they have about the event. The meetings began Monday in Port Morien, continued Tuesday in Albert Bridge, with a third tonight at the Birch Grove Community Centre at 7 p.m. "I've been pleasantly surprised - everyone has been very supportive," said MacKay. "They had the obvious questions about safety and we reassured them that Terry Dale is an international safety co-ordinator sanctioned to do Formula 1 races and NASCAR races. "That's one thing we're not going to go easy on. The safety will be there in spades." MacKay said along with economic benefits for the area, an enhanced roadway for the route will be a must. He said government has assured road improvements will be made for the specified route. "The TT is an international event that happens in Europe and it's going to happen over here, so it's a first in North America," he said. "This is meant to attract people from all over North America and Europe to come to Cape Breton, so it's going to be a big event. "The competitors will be at the highest level you can get." I was just sort of looking at that proposed course on Microsoft Streets & Trips. That has main roads in that area, but not a lot of road names and other detail. But I think I can see the proposed route and that ought to make a great race. We're already getting mornings in the 40's here (Downeast Maine) so the weather up there then will be "refreshing". But there is nothing more splendid than Indian Summer days at this time of year. From here (near Bangor, ME) to Louisbourg, N.S. is about 580 miles, that could make for a great "end of the season" bike trip. Keep us informed here on the BadWeb, maybe some of us can get up there. Why rent anything, if i can ride it out, enjoy the ride and do it in 3 days taking my time and loving every minute of it, cross several time zones and language barriers, why not just ride it, then camp or hotel it after we get there Part of the trip for me is the pleasure of riding it, if i was going to take an RV, it just dilutes the experience I know Bill has an extra bike, and you know i have an extra bike, so all you need to do is decide where you want to spend your money Gas for the bike trip enjoying the counrty side or on the plane ticket to Newfoundland Dennis is a maybe but i think he would go, mark would go, if he gets the air hawk Who else would go, figure 2 weeks including riding, and messing about, maybe 10 days this could be a really good time, think of it, the first new TT in 50 years, who wouldnt want to be there(hint hint BRag) R | ||

Not to steal Newfies fun, nor the location chosen, I just wonder why they didn't contact the operators of "The Silver State Classic" road race done in Nevada? Its an already established racing organization with already established routes... Now the bigger question...Laguna or the Breton TT? Damn that's a tough question... | ||

Ok R I better order an Airhawk NOW. The Cape Breton TT will have similar weather conditions to IoM, Nevada wouldn't be quite the same. | ||

First never trust Mapquest for driving times. They always err on the safe/long side of things. Which Mark are you speaking of, my tall skinny friend or another Mark. If its in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia then I am sure I can round up a few guys from around here to meet up with you as well. Its only a day away from me and I'd leave a couple days early and meet you up in New Brunswick somewhere. Currently the DR is making some strange noises up in the camshaft area so its coming home from the Summer House soon and going to be rebuilt over the winter. HOWEVER, I am picking up a 1979 Yamaha RD400 this week and will be turning it into a Cafe Racer over the winter, this RD400 will undergo a major overhaul and re-fit so another bike should not be a problem. Innes worst case I'll let ya use my daughters Yamaha TW200, it is road legal. hahahahahaha Nothing better than another East Coast Adventure!!! Excuse my ignorance but whats and "Airhawk"? Is it like a puffin muffin? Someone call Oz?!? | ||

I belive thats a one way race, no loop avaliable, so you can do a race like the tt, plus its highway That is like calling the Dragon a Highway, much of it is two lane. It would not be difficult to loop the 2 main race sections where they are the closest down near the starting point of both roadways. I have oft wanted to run the SSC but on two wheels and not four which is their only acceptable means. Hell even to just run the 90 mile stretch one way would be a hell of a race. | ||

The SSC was all about rich and stupid yuppies showing off their toys (and often hurting themselves in the process) the first few years. They'd come over, sign a liability release, prang themselves, and start suing everyone involved. Like the guy with a 200 MPH car that had 120 MPH tires on it. He thought they looked cooler. Jack | ||

We allready did that, and it lasted, if i recall about 20 minutes, he nows has a keen interest in an S3, and i must say he rode the wheels off of it, of course till i find more space i can not store it, but next year i should be able to If i could 2 dual sports would make the trip that much better, alass more time than money, the story of my life R | ||
