uhhhh.. chase- did I imply, somehow, that drugs were part of the freedom equation? how about you go ahead and grow yourself a nice beard and pony tail, and go spend the winter in Mexico, chasing some nice tail.
can't do it, can you? That's 'cause you're government property, lad. You're always gonna have to report, until the day your hitch ends.
that ain't freedom.

WEll, I never said you mentioned drugs...

As far as growing a pony tazil and beard, uh, NEVER crossed my mind, I have shaved my head since I was 16..so...

As faer as spending the winter chasing tail in Mexico...well, I was stationed in Corpus Christi for a while, so I basically spent 5 years chasing Mexican tail....

Next, I move back to New England, to finish my time...

As far as teh drugs thing goes, I was just implying, that drugs are rally the only thing I woudl have to worry about, but I was neevr into that... always got into trouble doing otehr things instead...

Things have changed in teh navy over the last 7 years, not for the better if you ask me...but thats my opinion.

Anyway, now that thats cleared up.... back to your regularly scheduled thread

Chase,
Man you ain't kidding that things have changed in the last 7 years in the military and not for the better! I actually was supposed to have been promoted last Dec but I would have had to go an extra 16 months past 20 before I could have retired. I told them "no thanks!!" the extra pay is not worth staying in a day longer!

I now work in a property mngt office dealing exclusively with rental homes. My job is to inspect all properties each week that are vacant. Doesn't pay very well but I get to ride my bike while doing it and get paid 38 cents a mile in addition to my pay!! Plus no weekends or nights!!!

Lot's of vets here, thanks to Trolldaddi and all them!

It is amazing how small the world can get on the net. I gave the Navy 26 years, walked away as a Senior Chief, and have not a single regret. A nice deposit shows up every month. I was a CTRCS (a Navy "ditty bopper" and "spook" in generic terms) and have some things in common with several others here.

I don't want to argue with Tramp but nobody is truely "free". The military folks just have a few less personal freedoms they he does and they are chosen from a different set. But we all share a lot of the "limitations on personal freedoms" everyday.

Members of every American-born generation of my family, on both my Mother's and Father's side, have served proudly, some stayed longer than others, a couple them never made it back home. I regret the loss of an Uncle I never got to meet, but I am proud of him and everyone that was willing to answer the call when it came.

For those that refuse to serve and do so within the law, that is their right. I'll bring them no harm but they will not get any true respect from me ever.

If we could just escape the control of the bastards that will raise a false call to arms out of stupidity or corrupt morals, we would have a better nation and world.

Jack

argue with me anytime, jack- i could use it.
bear in mind I didn't get my CIB by pumping gas at the local sunoco.
usually when someone claims to ahve been a 'spook' it's likely they were actually boatswain's mates. just my experience.
few spooks make that claim on the 'net, for many reasons; however, i trust your virtual word.

I did ten years in the Air Force...
Three years - Wright-Patt AFB OH.
Three years - NATO base outside of Naples, Italy
Four years - Robins AFB GA.
Wouldn't trade the experiences for nothin.
Decided to get out after three A.F. doctors misdiagnosed my wife and she passed.
Couldn't even consider staying in while being assigned to a combat communications unit (A.F.'s Army).
Bad enough my kids don't have a Mom any longer.
I am bummed about the retirement though. Next year
would've been the end of my tweenty. Life goes on.

Trolldaddi - Thanks for your service. I wish the best for you and your wife.

God Bless America!

Jackbequick, Did you do some time at Ft. Deven's or NTTC Corry Station?

I did 4 years on the podium at NTTC Corry teaching all branches the CTT advanced course -- good days they were too. Went to school there myself in 1981.

No slack zone for Army E-7's going through the chief's initation though :-) I'll never eat another frozen boiled egg!

Tramp - Okay, I'm insisting that we not argue then. :>; )

I fully understand the CIB, thanks for doing that for us.

My time in war zones was done in support roles and I joyfully escaped unscathed and without any face to face armed confrontations.

As for the spook thing, when the name of your rating (i.e., MOS) is Cryptologic Technician it was not much of a leap for others to call us spooks. I have not breached any promises or broken any trusts in mentioning it. It was a job, and I liked the job, enough said.

As for the BM's that claimed to be spooks, they were thinking about some other kind of spook, like James Bond maybe.

I liked Bosun's, they were the backbone of the Navy. Well, except for the Officer's Corps of course. We'd have never done it without them.

Oh don't get me wrong, I will take my 2 bedroom house, oversized garage/shop, and my wife's cooking long before I move back into a dorm and eat SOS for breakfest again. But I am one person who can say the Military did more for me then anything else could have during that time of my life. I used every penny of my GI bill, bought my first home with a no money down VA loan, and learned the true meaning of personal responsibility. Now if I could only beat that trait into the head of everyone else I know... lol

Koz - I agree completly. It definately made me grow up quite a bit. After returning to my home town after ten years I realized that all my friends that stayed local haven't grown up at all. Try to be a good example for them, but they just don't understand. I was fortunate enough to visit five other countries while serving and am very proud to have been born an American. Uncle Sam paid for my house and three car garage. There was a settlement after the mistreating of my wife. My kids are set financially for life as well. I met my wife in one of those dorms. Really liked the SOS as well... laughs. Take Care!

Bigdaddy -
--.- ... .- ..... -.-

I trained at Corry a couple of times, but the last was in about '73. Then a couple of brief visits. Never got to Devens though. But if you got invited to an initiation you were doing good. I still miss those a little about this time of year.

I was in '64-'90, went in as a young man and left as a dinosaur. It changed a lot and I liked a lot of the stuff that went away. But no hard feelings, it all counted on 20, or 26, or whatever.

I like to think that it was spooks of many different ilks that won the cold war and put Communism in its grave. But in hindsight, that may have been a bad thing to do.

I'll bet only a small number here would vote against bringing back the draft or reinventing it as a mandatory Federal service period in some form. What a great way it is to help young folks meet the world, get their heads and values straightened out, and become socially acclimated and ready for life.

Hey Jack,

+5 too.

Good to talk to another old ditty-bop -- never was very many of us and our number continue to decline rapidly.

I agree with you and I remember the years, and freaking years, I spent in remote locations in Europe doing the CTT thing (sitting side saddle with the CTR's.) Field Station Augsburg, Woebeck, Zendscheid (area) and the like -- best years of my life by far.

I'd not change a thing if I had the power to do so -- much like Odie spoke to earlier. My 20 years gave me the tools, and education, to become a very successful father/husband and make a dollar or too at the same time.

Stay in touch,,,,

Whats wrong with Boatswains Mates? I retired as a BMC after 26. I don't claim to do anything I did not do. But there are things I did do that I won't claim. All who serve and do their job contribute to the whole. With out the BM's The ships do not go any where cause theres no one to cast off the lines. With out the snipes the motors don't run, with out the QM's you can't find your way. With out the cook no one eats. With out the Store keepers no one gets paid. With out the spooks, GM's, etc not many reasons to get underway.

just using Boatswain's mate as a "for instance" rate. could have cited any rate for that matter. Many of my bestestest friends were boatswain's mates, the true meat and potatoes of any fleet.
My point is/was that most prior cervix ( I thank you) guys you speak to all claim SOF/Intel rates/MOS., as if noone ever was a wrench or a cook. or a QM or a fireman, etc. etc...

Blame the Boats first thats what everyone does.(Just Kidding) But we can take it. Most BM's I know would not trade the fresh air for the dark inner recesses of the cave,CIC or the engine room.

I just fixed airplanes, allowing others to play with them. Sometimes I even got to play a little

Now I put new toys into them, so the new crop can play with them easier.

Nobody wants to flip switches or turn knobs anymore. Just want to push a soft key and go.

One of my favorite sea stories is about a Navy buddy of mine. And this one is a no-sh**ter.

Imagine being in Pauline's Bar in Olongapo (Subic Bay) and a 6'-2" tall, 230 pound, and very salty looking PO1 with four hash marks is talking to a Fleet Marine PFC who is 5' 4" tall and sort of looking for a fight. The PO1 tells the jarhead "I don't have anything against the Marine Corps pal. One of my brothers is a Marine." The Marine makes some begrudging acknowledgment and starts to turn away. Then the PO1 says "But my sister now. She plays the piano in a whorehouse in Winnemucca, Nevada. The folks are *really* proud of her."

No fight broke out but it was a close call. Jim Bogue!? Are you still out there somewhere buddy?

sitting around the campfire one night, a buddy of mine and his dad were talking about his father's paratroopers school. Frank's last day at jump school he was the last one out of the plane. He gets up to the door, and tells the seargent he can't do it. The Srg. says, boy your goin out that door. The Srg. was this big ugly dude, he said he was a lot like Mr. T's character on the A-Team except not as friendly a disposition, so this big, ugly Srg. drops his pants and says, boy if you don't...I'll try to clean it up, he says, if you don't go out that door, I'm gonna put my manhood where the sun don't shine! About that time, my friend Delbert goes, well Daddy, did you jump?? His dad said, Yeah, a little bit.
