I bought my son a CRF250R a couple months ago (he is 14 years, bike was a reward for him getting straight A's freshman year) he has raced it all summer, and it is darned near a perfect bike, but i am drawn to the KTM 250SXF.

Dysty - I remember ice racing well & those hex slot head, self drilling sheetmetal screws. It was more fun without them though...lol.

Tramp - Can Am was made by Bombardier but they bought their engines from Rotax in Austria. Rotax made a sweet 2 stroke with a rotary valve instead of reed valves like all the others. It was still peaky but not as bad as most of the rest. I campaigned on a 175 and then on a 250. I remember Ossas too.

Jeremyh - I guess I must be lucky. I have probably fallen upwards of 1000 times (I'm not bs-ing)riding and racing the dirt. Many times over the bars at speed or looping on vertical hills. I never broke a bone even. Cuts & bruises and knocked out a couple of times but never a trip to the hospital.

I've just sold my DRZ400 to help pay for a new XB12Ss. I scare myself in the dirt any more because my 57 year old brain still thinks I have a 25 year old body. What really scares me is I look at those freestyle guys and know that I can do that.....

Just last Sunday a buddy and I rode our dirt bikes to Marcus Dairy in CT. We took the abandoned railroad tracks all the way from Dutchess County NY to CT. I was on my 1993 DR650S and he was on a DRZ400. We blasted through 30 miles of whoops, trestle bridges, deep gravel, and 55 mph runs on the tracks. My only mods on my DR are Pirelli MT21 DOT knobbies and a 1 tooth smaller front sprocket. It desperately need suspension mods though. I got a flat rear tire just 200 yards from the Dairy. Thank God for small favors. I had no idea how I'd have gotten out about if I'd gotten the flat halfway through the ride.

I'd almost forgotten how much fun off-roading is.

XR650R, and too many to count since I was 10, the first bike I ever touched was a honda 50cc automatic transmission dirt bike. I have lots of respect for people who ride dirt, in my opinion, that kind of offroad is one of the most dangerous types of riding situations.

I hope to take my uly offroad soon. but i'm still a bit worrieda bout the tires.

What's a PETeDAKAR?

Yeah, I was getting pretty lazy by the time Grizzly took that pic. I'd been over that hump about twenty times by then... : )

Fullpower, I raced motorcross for 4 years, got kind of burned out and bought the Buell. Starting to miss it, but truely I do not miss the cost of the sport, when you race it gets expensive. I raced the 250C class (Novice). I went out to watch a race last weekend and the bug is kind of coming back. My last bike was an 03 yamaha YZ450F. If I do get back into it I will get a Suzuki or Kawasaki 250cc fourstroke, either the RMZ250 KXF250. Yamahas get a worn look to quickly and I just am not a fan of Hondas, the KTM's feel like you are on a 2X4.

Whatever you get you will enjoy, just remember to get it to handle properly for your style before you do anything. Too many people try to get more power out of a bike that they aren't even able to ride to it maximum potential. Suspension is always my first mod.

The dirt is always fun and don't take the racing to seriously or you will get burned out.
