My mirrors drop down when riding the S-2. Does anyone have a way to tighten up the mirrors so this doesn't happen?

Bill,

There is nothing in the manual that I can see. I have a '95 S2. The boot that fits between the mirror and the mount that screws to the fairing fits into a groove and can be slid off and on. Warm it up first with a hair drier, makes it a lot easier. Check to see if there is way to adjust once it is removed.

If you find one, let the factory know. There isn't one there. I've used several "cheat" methods, mostly revolving around various sticky substances. And, I bought several extra sets of mirrors and trained myself that the final step to every wheelie must be the upward flick of the back of the right hand agin the bottom of the mirror....adjustment...simple aclimation :)

Court,
Since we are on the subject of S2 trivia, Jim_Sb and I recently tried to determine the difference between Parkway Blue and the Black Sapphire (at least for 95 & 96 S2). Aaron and others weren't sure. Jim_Sb says my color, check profile, looks the same as his. HD says his is Black Sapphire. But I am told that Parkway Blue is closer to a purple, which in the sunlight, mine reflects a purple hue under the paint (hard to see unless at an angle). The paint is actually a dark blue, but not a navy blue, in the shade. Is this the purplish color that Parkway Blue is meant to be?

Is there a paint code located in the VIN or on the bike somewhere? How does one determine the paint name?

Dave:

There is not a paint code "in" the VIN, but the original color can be determined from the VIN.

Your Buell is Black Saphire, please update profile appropriately.

Parkway Blue (and yes, there's alledgedy a pretty funny story) looks PURPLE.

Here's the test:

From 50' Parkway Blue is Purple, Black Saphire is Black or the dark blue equivalent.

Say what? I'm not sure? Sure I am. The Black Sapphire is a dark blue shade. The Parkway Blue is very purple, it's really a stretch to even call it blue at all. The two don't even remotely look alike, and it's very clear which is which.

Parkway Blue with white frame is one of my favorite combos (mine, being a T, has a gray frame). It's a fairly rare combination, you don't see it much. The bright red on white frame like Tat's and FMJ's is another favorite of mine.

On the thread of droopy S2 mirrors, try using loctite on the ball end. Put a couple drops on the ball and rotate the mirror to coat the surface. I found this works quite well. The end closest the fairing has an allen head bolt which can be tightened if the movement is forward and aft. Hope this helps.

Any one interested,

One of the two things I did not like about stock S2 mirrors were as stated, they do not stay adjusted and the other is that rumpled looking boot for the stalk. I solved both of the problems by adapting Yamaha snowmobile mirrors to my S2's. They come in a matte finish with a list price of 79.99 for a pair.

The mirrors require the relocation of the rear mounting fastener but it is a simple operation that requires nothing more than a couple of minutes and simple hand tools.

1. Remove the rear mounting stud flush with the mirror base.

2. Mount the mirror on the bike with the front stud snug. Be sure the mirror is positioned correctly.

3. Use a Sharpe to mark the location of the new rear bolt from the inside of the faring through the exposed faring support hole.

4. Remove the mirror and fold the boot back and out of the way so you do not drill through it.

5. Drill the mark out from the mounting face for a 6 X 1.0 MM Hex head bolt. The fastener needs a minimum length of .750.

Note; I prefer to drill (no.9 or 13/64) and tap the mirror base to thread the mounting bolt in from the mirror side of the base using red locktight. There is not a lot of material in the thickness of the base so if you install and remove the mirrors frequently the threads may strip out. This is not a problem since you can fold the top of the boot back enough to slip in a open end wrench to secure the bolt as you tighten the nut.

Rickie,

Thanks for the tip on the S2 mirrors as I'm tired of replacing them every time someone in a parking lot runs their body into them and they start drooping every time I run up the R's at full throttle. (nope, engine ain't stock)

Is that Parkway Blue that you've painted your mirrors? If so How did you mix your paint? Please tell as it looks fantastic.

TIA

Rickie: thanks much for the excellent write-up. Quick question: do these new mirrors reach out a bit further than stock (doesn't look like it in the pictures)? That's one gripe I have with the S2 mirrors: all I see in them is my arms/shoulders.

Steve,

The color you see is a custom tint I mixed of Kosmoski's Deep Lilac Pearl. It only looks like the Parkway Blue due to the picture exposure with fluorescent lighting. This is the bike prior to color matching the mirrors.

S2

The prep to paint the mirrors is straightforward. I mask the glass and stem then wet sand with 280 to 320 paper. Then treat the mirror with a plastic prep and apply a couple coats of primer-surfacer. Apply a guide coat of black then sand with 400 paper and color match to the bike.

Henrik,

The mirrors are nearly identical in size and position to stock with a more attractive shape in my opinion. I do not think they will address the problem you are experiencing. With my adjustments, the most I might have to do is tuck in my elbow occasionally.

Rickie,

Are they from a specific model snowmobile, or any of the snowmobiles in the Yamaha line?

Thanks for the great tip!

Carl,

Actually a friend of mine had seen the mirrors on a 96 or 97 alphabet-soup-designation 600 cc Yamaha and thought they would be adaptable to our Buells. He went to the dealership to price them out and the parts person pointed out that the same mirror was used on the "sleds" and "wet bikes" at a significantly reduced price. So he cross-referenced the part # and provided use with ones listed above.

If your question is asked with the thought of looking for used units, I am not absolutely sure of the year the mirrors were used on snowmobiles. I would venture a guess as the same years as the bike (95 to 97) and with all models the same mirror was offered as the standard option. I hope this helps.

Brad,

That orange S2 is my favorite also, at least in styling. I love the look and feel of the bike but cannot resist the 98ftlb and 96hp of the multi colored one. I built the orange one for a good friend who has now taken the bike home to South Carolina. I miss it to the point that I am contemplating building something similar for myself. Maybe by spring I will have something new together. Here is a shot of it on the move………

Rickie,

Thanks for the info. I was looking for the info so I could just walk in and give the model or year # of the sled. The guys at my local import dealer are not the brightest bulbs on the tree and I figured the more info I could get the better.

Thanks again.

Rickie,
I tried to catch you before you left the shop today. I was going to ask about the orange S2. I did recall that it belonged to someone else but I didn't remember the whole story. That had to be hard to let that one out of the stable, even if you did build it for someone else.

BTW, got a killer deal on the Buell rain suit today. I had intended on getting on regardless but it was 50% off!!! I didn't find out until the cashier told me the total. I spent less on parts and rainsuit than the regular cost of the rainsuit itself!

Nice seeing you again.

I don't think so , I believe the bolt pattern is different. If I find a tape measure I'll go check.
...
ok, ~3cm / ~1.25" center/center for the S3 mirrors.
