There are several variations on the concept, but basically it is something to keep your frame or bodywork from scraping along the pavement in the event of a fall. Some are cosmetic, some are functional, some are both.

Many otherwise "not that bad" XB's end up totalled because the bike slid down the road and ground a the frame, which is also the tank. Replacing it costs a fortune in parts and labor.

As a side note, the guy doing the test rides (who probably sees a totalled XB a month easy) said he had a couple that slid over 200 feet, one that went like 260 feet, down the pavement. The frames were totalled of course, but had not ground through and did not leak.

So anyway steve, if you could basically glue a hockey puck to the high points of the frame, then in many cases the hockey puck would take all the damage (and be replaced for $20), instead of the frame taking the damage. It is not a magic bullet, if you ride the bike into a tree it is still toast, but many moderate accidents involve nothing more then a sliding bike down the highway.

Even just a parking lot tipover could put a dent in the frame, which would look bad even if it did not really hurt anything.

On my Cyclone, the tank / frame won't hit until the handle bars bend. Otherwise, it's all shifter, levers, mirrors, turn signals, and footpegs, none of which are horribly expensive.

Tube frame gas tank breather question:

I've got an older bubbled-decal tank with the straight-up breather tube on it instead of the updated 90° version. If I were to use this tank on a bike should I pop out the ball in the tube to keep the tank from choking off, or should I try to find a newer breather setup? Thinking I may just pop the ball out of the tube since I believe it is in there mainly for tipover drainage protection and when upright and normal it is open anyway, but I could be wrong.

Thoughts?

If anyone is curious I'm going to play around with some paint on the spare tank and don't want to mess with the tank on the bike now.

You could probably find the newer, angled breather for not too much $$ (Daves?). If'n I found myself with the bike on it's side and myself next to it, I'd probably prefer the gas stayed inside the tank ; )

Yeah, probably right. Was thinking maybe I'd just swap the filler ring between the tanks if the painting goes well. I'll stop at a local shop on the way home and check availability of the parts by themselves.

Yep, knew about those, thanks for the heads up though.

Stopped at a shop on the way home Friday. The nipple is available separately as is the chrome ring, so if I need them I can order them locally or via the good guy 100 miles north.

My return oil line from the oil cooler was leaking at the crankcase and dripped oil all over the front and bottom of the motor and the muffler. What can I use to clean it, other then washing. Degreaser? B-12 Chemtool? Maybe H-D Wheel & Tire Cleaner?

Anyone?
Thanks!

I have a set of 2000 X-1 bodywork that is white in color. Anyone know the paint code and is it still available. I believe it may be Arctic white.
Thanks in advance.

Has anyone ever put S2 lower fairing on a S3? I'm sure it would take a little fiberglass work to match up, but it would be nice looking.

Ok...new here...and to Buells....but so far I am loving it!
Can I put the chin spoiler on my 1996 S1? either a factory model that will cross over, or an aftermarket peice? I am not above SOME fab work if necessary.
Also how different is the M2 rear section than mine? They look a lot alike....and that seat sure looks comfy

Your Lightning S1's subframe is a bit shorter than that of the Cyclone M2's. There is a two-up tail/seat option for the S1 though.

As to the chin fairing, you can directly mount one from an X1 lightning. Not really a fairing though, more just a cosmetic piece of plastic. It has no bottom.

I hear those two up tail sections are super rare though??
And yeah I know the spoiler is just cosmetic...but it still looks cool....I am usually about go quality...not show quality...but they look mean! SO I will have an excuse to hop up the motor more to offset the weight I gain from it....Think 20hp will cover it??
Thanks for the super fast answers!!

Smitty your frame is not even close to what a M2 sub frame looks like.So no it won't fit.Keep your eyes here for the classafied's or Ebay for a twin tail kit for a S1.There hard to find but you do run into them now and then.

Valez -- the frame color is Nuke blue -- it's powder coated, and the rumor on the street is that there was only one supplier for that particualr color -- Classic Coatings (I think near Milwaukee)

can't help ya with the body work stuff, I'm afraid, but others will chime in

Valez....from my conversations with Classic Coating, the Nucular Blue was a multi-coat process. The still can do color but it's VERY expensive. Almost any good powder coat company should be able to replicate but it will probably still be costly.

I beleive the '98 body color was listed as Molton Orange. The paint code above is DBC 61876. Here's a link to another site that has all the proper mix proportions: SportTwin

I hope that helps!

Valez,
I had the nuclear blue paint custom mixed by a co. I found on the internet, Motor Cycle Paint supply. They had made the color previously for someone and still had the formula. Bomber is correct it is a powder coat finish from the factory. The paint I had mixed is a tri-coat. Base, Top and clear. I haven't used it yet so I'm not sure of the match but it won't need to be perfect.

I am getting my X1 chin fairing painted, and was thinking of some way to stop the paint from chipping from gravel / dirt. Clear silicone RTV about 1/4" thick molded over the fairing - somehow? Anyone done something similar? Saran wrap on the fairing and then put the RTV on so it is over the rear lip and thus removable? Keep air bubbles out? How to mold the outside?
TIA!

Paint it with an additive available at your local autobody supply. It's what some vehicles(cages)come with from the the factory. It's used usually on the airdam and lower body panels. Probably some type of urethane.

Irish, I believe all the 2000 and newer M2 and S3 body parts should go right on without issue, only cosmetic (sticker) differences if any. Some of the 99 parts will go right on as well, but might look differently (I believe the tank changed on the M2 in 2000).

I actually saw a picture somewhere of an S3 frame with an S1 tailsection. The frame was sticking out the back by about 4".

My local HD dealer can order Buell parts for me, but doesn't have Buell parts catalogs. Would someone know the part number for the rubber trim ring that goes on the tank cover to surround the gas filler on an X1? I bought a tank cover off eBay, and it doesn't have the trim ring on it....
TIA

Wesbone, do a search on the XBoard for Firebolt tail on lightning. A couple people have done the swap now.
