About 25,000 miles ago I installed a TM Components header pipe backet, the one that holds the pipe on the left side of the motor as it meets the silencer. The piece is CNC billet aluminium and was beautifully polished, not an imperfection on it.
While doing general maintenece on the bike I discoverd it had broken sometime ago and this resulted on some gouging of the engine case. I just ordered another one and hope this one lasts as long. Well worth the incovenience and shortened life for its weight and looks.

my v&h is broken. instead of the mount going (like last time), the rear tab that is welded on the canister cracked and disconnected itself from the mount.

i can't get a new pipe until the broken one inspected because i don't have an invoice (bought used). i need a new pipe sooner than that (no other vehicles in the garage).

any suggestions for which pipe to pick up
(under 5 bills and in stock somewhere would be great bonus points).

Iggy,

Hands down the best pipe for the money is the White Bros. Is adjustable like a supetrapp and almost unbreakable. Best part is they only cost $258 and the company seems to always have one in stock.

I agree, I bought my white bros at www.directparts.com
07-857 ALUM E-SERIES MFLR BUELL 99-00 $228.79
add some extra discs to get the total over $250 and get free shipping...

Iggy,

Most folks go with 14-15 discs and the stock end cap. Installation is so much easier than V&H(just bolts up to one side of the rear bracket) and you can adjust your primary w/o dropping the muffler. I run 12 the stock 12 discs in mine mainly because I use my X1 exclusively for twisty stuff and that combo gives great low-end torque but I give up some in the top RPMs.

Iggy:
From 12,000+ miles with a W.B. I can agree with Dan on the merits of the e-series. One item to note is that when you instal the W.B. the "Z" bracket for the stock rear mount needs to be removed (save the extra rubber isolator for future use). Otherwise it causes the slip-on to hang down too low at the rear. Unfortunately I can't post a picture of this set up now, since I'm at work. If you a shot of the instal drop me a line and I'll post one when I get home.

According to the manufacturer the wrap does typically add a few ponies. By keeping the exhaust gases hotter for longer, it increases scavaging. It also covers a ding and some scratches from a crash for me...heh

Road Thing...did you wrap the entire header or just a portion of it? Wrapping the header, doing away with the heat shields (they seemed to trap more heat than anything), and replacing the stock airbox has completely cured my hot leg syndrome.

I've used the stuff on my car, too, and as long as you high temp silicone the headers and wrap it'll last a long time.

Rocket--Joe won't come out from under the porch--not even when I bait him with a beer--what did you do to him??-----exhaust wrap---if you keep the temp up in the exhaust system you have changed the time of the sound wave return (the speed of sound is tied to temp) and than can help time the low pressure return and time it better for intake fill

Ron :

Joe's gone off beer since his addiction to nitros.

At Bonneville, as I'm sure Joe told you, he drank a full bottle and it still wasn't enough :)

Cheers,

Ya got'ta watch that Rocket ... he has a way about him that's for sure. I think he infected all of us at Bonneville.

Back to exhaust ... do you know of anyone that has used semi-conductor grade electro-polished tubing for exhaust? Do you think any significant gains would develop in the sound wave and/or low-pressure return because of the super smooth micro-mirror finish inside the tubing?

Just curious,

Do you guys use the "blocked" end disc on the White Bros E-Series?? I'm currently running about 12 discs and an open end. Curious if the system is too open, causing lost torque (or even worse, running it too lean...). The carb is re-jetted to WB recommendations so I guess it's not a problem... The open muffler sounds really nice (loud) on my M2'99, so I'd rather not close the rear end...

Jojje,
What's the point of having any discs if you leave the end open?

I agree with Jake. Leaving the end cap off the White Bros is a bad idea. It is designed to have some back pressure and uses the discs to help the scavenge effect that gives our bike great torque. If you really want to have the option of being loud then get the snuf'r end cap in which you can open it up when you just want noise and are willing to give up power.

Jake,
No reason except looks and sound... But I guess you guys are right. I've been running it with the open end cap for quite a while now (he he), being a menace to society... But I'll try the 12 disc closed end combo. It's bound to make a difference, especially on my M2. I'll probably miss the sound though... I'll be posting the result!

Thanks for the info

Anyone out there with a 1999 or newer X1 Lightning (or any model) and running with the Kook's exhaust system. I'm days away from purchasing a full system for my 2001 X1, I'd like to know what the Kook's looks like on the bike. If you are can you post a picture here? I've heard that the Kook's header can touch down on the right hand side during aggressive cornering. Is this true with all their header's or just the old "leg roasting" one? One other thing. I know that they are loud, and loudness is a personal perception. How does it compare to a 80inch Harley with straight pipes? Or an inline four with a slip-on?

Alright, yesterday I "closed" the rear end on my E-Series muffler, 12 disc config. The aim was to increase the low end torque on my M2, having enough backpressure (compared with the open rear end..). The result:

Despite the fact that it should have increased the torque, the torque decreased. The bike feels tired, choked, it didn't like being "reved" (so much for backpressure/torque). Powerwheelies is normally easy in 1st (happens accidentally, he he), but was very hard with the closed end (running US rear sprocket and Europe front). I'm back with the open rear end/12 disc config and the bike feels a lot more agile... I guess the only reasonable explanation is that the open eng config creates enough backpressure. It sounds a LOT nicer as well... So those of you with an E-Series muffler should try and let us know if this was an exception

/Jojje

Note: "Open" rear end is still with their end cap but without the solid (without center hole) disc

Just installed a Vance & Hines kit on my 98 S1 and it has really mad a big difference to the bike. The power is much better especially on the low end. The carb is also re-jetted.

Should this have made such an improvement. I can't believe the difference this small change has made.

I only wish I had did this earlier in the summer as our season is soon comming to an end.

I would recommend this pipe to anyone looking to change the exhaust.

Keep riding.

Bull,
I guess it all depends on how you have your bike jetted. If it was set-up for the open exhaust then it will run better in that config. Once you make a change to the exhaust you would need to also change your jets accordingly. Everything working together. I personallly am thinking of getting one of those snuf'r end caps to see how it will work. Luckily I have a fuellie so all I need to do to change the jetting is go for a long ride. The thing to remember is set your bike up in a way that makes YOU happy. :)

got the e-series today. pulled the broken v&h and popped on the new one.

install was definitely easy.

sound is good (12 disks and the cap). torque is better. no dyno, just feel.

i may havta play with a/f mix but other than that the new pipe mated up well.

i hope it don't break

Caboose,

Scroll back to September 21, 2001, and view my post on the "Kooks" full system I just installed on my 99M2. Don't know your noise tolerance level, but about 10 days was all I could stand from the muffler. . . . really loud! Matter of fact, I took it off and installed an Edelbrock series stainless steel muffler. Bottom line. . .Kooks system (at least for me) was way loud and the front mount did not fit. However, the header is well made and it made my Thunderslide equipped M2 run LEAN! This tells me something positive is taking place in the exhaust. As far as dragging the header, I haven't cranked my M2 way over in a couple weeks (tires were shot, just replaced them) but I don't see any way it could drag, it's centered and sufficiently tucked in.

Schemky,

Would you have any photos of the Edelbrock available? I am planning to use an Edelbrock muffler with my race header, and would be curious to see how you mounted yours. I would be especially interested in seeing how you did the rear mount. If you have any pictures, please post them. Thanks!

My 2 cents; I have been running a Supertrapp for over 30,000 now (since new) and love it. Yes i've had some problems but have had great cust. serv. from them. even had a part overnighted to hotel when on the road. My take on the disc issue is is run what you are looking for, I run 21 with open end cap( and yes exhaust still escapes thru dics, no backpressure would be no endcap).I run that conf. cause we ru on the highway alot and open raods on trips, I ride to work everyday 415 mi. every week, so I want my power at the top. Also the open end cap saved my bacon a couple of times from some overeager lane changers when I cracked the throttle opne to let them know i was there. Anyway hope I didn't bore ya, time for football and my gal is a football and Buell nut( god, I'm lucky) enjoy the hell outta your BUELLS! RL

Schemky,

Thanks for the reply. I'm starting to shy away from the Kook's system. I don't want something that's gonna be crazy loud. I can't attract to much attention as I'm the only Buell in town! I think maybe I'll take some advice from your previous post and just get the Buell race kit. At $1700 Canadian dollars (works out to around $1100 US) it seems REAL spendy though.
