Doc,

I am still using the stock 99 mounting bracket and original bushings. Nothing falls off on my bike, at least in the 11,000 miles I have on it.

From what I understand, the old-style Supertrapp IDS muffler is the that throws you. I do not want to spend $90 for the newer front bracket, but if mine fails, I will.

When I first started coming to this board over 2 years ago, I questioned my purchase after reading all the complaints. No regrets now though, and I am really enjoying my new S3 fairing :)

Thanks again Leeaw, I'm trying to decide whether or not to get rid of my M2, or to invest another $3k in her.

Leeaw,
My dealer is doing the new front bracket on my bike for free. I think it's a good-will item. You may want to check it out.

Hey Fastback69,

I ordered the Edelbrockk Tru-Flo stainless-steel muffler part number 25-5500. I had to get a local muffler shop to ever so slightly flare one end to allow for a slip fit over the Kook's collector. Fired the engine for a minute to check the sound, and it was really good without being obnoxious. Is was deep and mellow, where before it was raspy and LOUD. I am in the process of welding a mounting boss on the muffler body for the rear mount. The stainless steel shell polishes really well and has the potential to look really good. This Edelbrock item appears to be well made and has a lifetime warranty. I figure if it can support 4 cylinders (of a hot V-8) making 200+ hp, the Buell engine should be no problem. I speculate this could work well on the Buell race header and has the potential to be a sweet lookin' all stainless system for less money (muffler was $79.00 plus S&H). Wish now I would have bought the race header.

Hey Schemky,

Sounds like you have the Kooks header only? No Muffler from Kooks? Dare I ask how much?

Thanks

I am told that SuperTrapp provides a new IDS muffler fitting the Buell RACE header, and that there is a huge demand for it. Anybody having experience of that baby ? Pictures to share ? What is the reference number for this specific Trapp ?

S2Carl,

I ordered the Kooks complete exhaust system, header and muff' ($630.00 with shipping, "ouch"). The muff looks cool and fit better than the header, but for me, the muff is really loud, even when cruising, it's WAY loud. Was going to try to fit my old Borla to the Kooks header but won't work. So it looks as though I wound up spending about $710.00 for a header and a (stainless Edelbrock) muffler. Me thinks me paid way to much! I just finished welding a stainless mount using stainless rods to the Edelbrock and took my M2 for a spin. The Edelbrock sounds EXCELLENT, and at a cruise speed (65 - 80) has a satisfying, barely there, throaty rumble that I could live with all day long. Whack it, and it barks real good! I wish someone would attempt to mount this Edelbrock to the Buell race header, which would require fabrication of a front header support/mount and subsequent mods to fit a rear mount to the muff. Would be lots cheaper (and probably better) than what I just did. Watch Ebay if you want a new Kooks muffler (less header of course).

Hey Bushmasta,

My 2 cents worth on mounts and Buells. You must expend the necessary effort to make CERTAIN that when you mount any aftermarket pipe, that everything lines up with NO STRESS. If you gotta' push, pull, or shoe-horn any mounting point, troubles comin'. Start at the header and work your way to the last mount on the muffler, being CERTAIN that everything virtually falls into place. Some aftermarket pipes rear mounts I have seen have been adequate to cheesy. Look at a stock Buell muffler and you'll realize how important substantial support is. I made a rear mount for my old Borla that used the old style split isolators, welded a stainless "Gorilla" front mount to the muff being careful to properly mate with the front mount, and went 10,000 trouble-free miles (I just took it off, I must be nuts!).

Schemky,

Which Eidelbrock did you use? Do you have a part number?
I'm going to fab up a exhaust for my M2, I was going to start with a plain old steel unit and see how it went. But if I can find a SS unit, I'll jump right in.

What is the diameter you used?

Do you have any pics?

Lots of questions huh?

Bluzm2,

I would be glad to send you some pics of my new muff. Edelbrock part number is 25-5500, Jeg's part number is 350-5500. log on to www.jegs.com or call them toll-free at 1-800-345-4545. I wouldn't recommend mentioning a Buell. Remember, this muff COULD be made to fit the stock header, but would require a 90 degree connector and will probably require some decent metal working skills and patience. Will likewise probably require lots of fab to fit the Buell race header. If you like to modify/tinker/experiment and have a welder, torch, pipe cutters, etc. or have a buddy that does, the choice is yours. As I mentioned previously, the Edelbrock muff is stainless-steel, well made, will polish to a mirror shine, has a lifetime warranty, and sounds REALLY GOOD!!

Bluzm2/Brad,

Just got through looking in the Jeg's catalog and found a section where you can order mandrel bent stainless-steel tubing (cheap to). The 2.5" 'J bend' piece is part number 289-42432. Damnit. I should have found this sooner. This should GREATLY simplify the fab of your exhaust system. Get a muffler shop to make the end flares for you, and you should be able to make a first class system for your M2 for a lot less than I spent. Send me some money.

Schemky,
I planned to use the bent pipe from a stock exhaust (I have a couple hanging around I cut apart and messed around with). It's SS, you just need to cut off the old front muffler "cap" and dress it up on a belt sander. It too should polish up nicely as it's the same as he stock ss header. I've got a welder and the bug to save some $$ for other cool stuff so i think I'll give it a whack!

Thanks for the info. If you don't want to post the pics here, you can send them to the email in my profile.

Thanks again

Brad

Shemky, Id like to see some pics too. I have the Kooks system and love it. I'd kinda like a muffler with a cleaner, mellow sound though. What other pipe is the edelbrock comparable to?

The Jeg's catalog suggestion was great. I was on there checking out Borla (nice oval can), Flow Master (too car like) and another interesting bit here.

I don't subscribe to loud pipes save lives but it is fun hearing yourself off of bldgs. So, in a moment of desperation I thought about using an open pipe and just bolting it up. But then I remembered how HD-poseur like that was and left it. But I dig the idea of just having a straight looking pipe coming off the cycle.

In the Jegs catalog they have inserts that you put into plain pipe and hold in by either welding or pop rivets. Check it out: http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=4546&prmenbr=76&lastcat=2315

I wonder if the tightness of the fitting would be enough to keep it from rattling....

Just did a bunch of work to my S1W, got around to putting on the replacement Supertrapp muffler that they sent me under warranty. Had to use my old stock header instead of my race hearder for now, figured it'd be on awhile while I figure out my race header muffler solution (edelbrock is sounding pretty good) so I went ahead and polished my old stock header while I was at it.

Gotta say: ST gets an A for fit on this one. Went right on, everything lined up really well, no stress in the mounting at all. Only thing that I did was put longer rear clamp bolts on, otherwise they're a bear to get started with just one person. Sounds nice, looks nice.

Al: your message means that there's not yet a SuperTrapp pipe available to fit the race header. Is that right ? Patrick Busler at SuperTrapp tells me that the reference 725-71235 would indeed fit the race header. I'm therefore a bit surprised. I'd be glad to have some feedback from somebody on-line who would have seen and used this reference. How long is the 725-71235 pipe ? Does it stand far enough from the rear tire ? Does it also have the conical front plate ? Before ordering that reference, I'd like to be sure that it's an easy fit to my race header...

Shemky,
Thanks for the info. Just checked and saw that the Edelbrock is 7+ inches wide. How does it fit in there? Are there any clearance problems?

BTW, good job on the ingenuity.

Jerome,
I don't know that there isn't an ST that fits, I just know that the replacement they sent me doesn't. The 2 V&H's I have don't fit without massive modifications (that I may just start doing), the 2 Bros muff on the way that I get for loaning them my S3 for fit checks won't fit either.

Thanks Al for your comments. Something appears strange to me : on one side, Patrick Busler at SuperTrapp says that there is a large demand for the reference 725-71235, and on the other side nobody mentions it here. I thought that this is a Buell forum... ;-) Please, somebody out there who knows about that ref and who can comment ?

S2carl

The fit is tight but it does work, looks a lot like the stock muffler but in stainless. The only real drawback is the inlet and outlet are centered. It would be ideal if the outlet was offset, but this series Edelbrock is not available offset. It will be necessary to weld an angle cut piece of stainless pipe (that I removed from the outlet to gain adequate rear tire clearance) to divert exhaust gas from the rear tire, which I have not done yet. I have used 4 different mufflers on my M2, the stocker, a Borla, Kooks, and the Edelbrock. I prefer the Borla and the Edelbrock so far. Remeber, I am using the Kooks header, have no idea how this will work with the Buell race header. If you order the Edelbrock and it will not fit, you can send it back to Jegs for full credit (less shipping charges). I am going to attempt to post a picture as soon as possible, stay tuned.

Thanks for the photo, can you get one of your front and rear mounts?
Edelbrock does have a unit with an offset. I think I'm going to get out the tape measure and do a bit of "figuring".

How is the ground clearance? Looks like it may be a bit tight on a hard lefter with the suspension loaded.

Thanks

Brad,

You'll have to fabricate front and rear mounts. I have picture of the rear, and the way I accomplished the rear mount makes it extremely easy to do, you'll see it next. I am having an arthroscopic procedure done on my left knee 9/25/01 as an outpatient, and will post the pic as soon as I can, probably the next day or so. I have the picture, just need to crop it so it will be clear. Ground clearance is not a problem, the peg will touch B-4 the muff does.
