I just bought a 22 year old Buell (1999 X1). The odo says less than 7K miles, but the speedometer/odo are not working. The previous owner claims that it failed just a few hundred miles ago, and he *seems* like an honest fellow, but one never knows. He pointed to a small sensor-looking apparatus mounted atop the tranny, slightly to the rear of the front sprocket, and said that his mechanic had told him that that was what needed to be replaced to get the speedo working again. The odo LED readout on the speedo shows a number, which suggests to me that it's not a fuse issue, but the odo reading doesn't change. Anybody here desire to offer an opinion on the likelihood that that sensor is the issue?

That is your speed sensor and would more than likely be the culprit. Harley part number 74402-95. Could be a failed sensor or pinched wire somewhere or the worst case scenario would be metal shavings from the transmission are stuck to the bottom of it causing it to not pulse the speed to the odometer. Bad sensors are not uncommon.

Thanks much. I'll pull that sensor out and have a look

Had the same issue and it was because of bad grounding.
