The Home Shop Machinist, Sept/Oct 2004 issue, has an article on reconditioning old lathes.

I was going to be down in Bomber's neck of the woods last week and knowing he has a fairly old lathe thought it might be an article he'd like to read some. But after a slight argument with my gall bladder I had to head home before I got over to his place. Still have the magazine, got rid of the gall bladder, think I came out ahead in the deal.

Anyway, if any of you have an old lathe that needs some repair work it might be good to track down a copy of the magazine.
