Hello. I have a good question. Why one side of the Buell XB rocker box cover has diagonal step across the face?  | ||

What does it look like on the inside? Is this clearance for something? If not then adding a ridge like that would improve it's strength much like stamped parts have ridges to make them more ridged. Ruffles have ridges!! | ||

I do not see anything inside requires clearance that wall could be straight without interfering with internal components. It also looks like the step dives in, regarding the opposite side, so it is definitely not for clearance for internal components because of it takes space inside. So if it is for strength why it is only on one side of the cover? Maybe this is for clearance for external stuff like wiring harness? (Message edited by TPEHAK on February 10, 2021) | ||

Without researching, (and taking another look at a cover) I’d guess that it might be a strength rib that also contributes to sound control. | ||

It looks like I figured out what it is. It is just CAD modeling artifact, there is no functional or mechanical purposes for this feature. What they basically did is they designed symmetrical cover body and then added material on one side to match the rocker box profile to save design time. Or they took the old existing CAD model of the rocker box cover which was originally symmetrical shape and just modified it to not spent much time to design unique smooth shape for the cover. They could design the cover without this step but it would take more time for the CAD modeling work. The red contour on the picture is the symmetrical feature of the cover. The yellow line is the symmetry line. And you can see they just added material on one side to match the footprint of the cover to the rocker box.  |
