Three times I've had to end my ride dues to fuel pump, injector, etc. failures. Expensive to get back home and bummer to end the ride. So I'm thinking of chucking the FI in favor of a Mik 42-44 flat slide. Anyone know the process?

Depends on what bike you are riding.
XB and 1125 series don't have much room in there because the frame/tank takes all that room up.
If you have an X-1, sure.

Either way it sounds like killing a gnat with a big clumsy hammer.
