I recently bought a 2009 XB12SS with 21,000 miles. The bike has been awesome; however, just recently, I am having problems starting it. When I turn the key to on with the bike in neutral, the neutral light comes, the oil light comes on and the gauges sweep, but the engine light flashes in conjunction with the fuel pump. The pump goes on-and-off, on-and-off, while the light flashes. After 5-10 tries of turning the key off and flipping the kill switch, I have, thankfully, been able to eventually get the engine light to come on solid and fuel pump primes for 4-5 seconds and the bike starts as usual. I tested the battery and it read 12.6V. The battery is 3 years old. No loose terminals, main ground is tight, and fuses looked good. Any ideas? Thank you for your assistance

I tried to take a video 3x times and everything worked fine. I keep the bike on a trickle charger, when not in use. That is why I originally was thinking battery, because it has only given me a hard time after a day of sitting in the parking lot at work. I'll try to get a video uploaded. I ordered a fuel pump online today. If not the pump, figured it won't be a bad part to have on-hand.

Is the engine kill switch in turned OFF position when you turn the key ON? Looks like bad relay or bad battery. Check electric diagram to figure out which relay causes the trouble. Probably bad ignition relay. Or take all the relays out and stick them back in different spots and see if the symptoms are the same. If the battery is weak the key switch relay may engage and disengage causing similar symptoms. Connect car battery and see see if the symptoms exist.

Ordered relays and battery. I'll start with that and update with results. Thank you for your guidance on this.

Before ordering relays and battery you can check them like I described, they can be good. If you do not have a car so you can not jump your motorcycle of it you can connect voltmeter to the motorcycle battery terminals and see how low voltage drops during this event when you turn key on, engine kill switch on and pushes the starter trigger. If voltage stays above maybe 9 volts the battery is probably OK and the issue is in different place.

I switched the ignition and starter relays. I also did a load test after switching the relays. 3x the bike started perfectly; however, the first startup with load test dropped to 7V. The next 2 startups voltage stayed around 9.5V.

What do you mean "stayed 9.5V"? You mean dropped? After engine started the voltage should raise up to around 14V.

7V looks pretty low. The battery is not very good or maybe not charged. I replaced AGM batteries in my Buell each year before I started using LiFePo battery because of after one year they were barely able to crank the engine and yours is 3 years old.

Yeah, sorry, meant dropped to that voltage. Yes, after the bike was running the voltage was above 13.5V. I ordered a Firepower Featherweight battery with 240CCA. The battery on it now is a Deka with 220CCA.

Replaced battery and all relays; thing starts better than ever. I did buy an OEM fuel pump I'll probably just hang on to, unless anyone interested in buying it.? LOL
