Rick_A - I was hooked on an S1 as my first street bike riden after getting my cycle license. Two Buell's later I think the perfect combo for any two street bikes is an S1 and S2. I can see being some old guy going through a mid-life crisis and searching out an S1...

Rocketman- Yes. Clip-ons are too low for my tastes, Crossroads bars are more than I'm willing to pay right now, and I think drag bars are a pretty damn good compromise.

JasonI and Mikej- Glad to hear it!
I'm really going to be proud of being the only guy on a Harley powered machine in my area who isn't bearded, grossly overweight, and middle aged.

Rick,
Time gets to all of us eventually (I just mostly ignore it), enjoy the ride. And if you ever think of racing a bagger, check his/her luggage bottom corners first, some of the old guys can flat fly.

(Hmmm, no old bearded smiley faces on the clipart page, hint hint)

Rick_A - I'm with you both. I see a lot of older posers and I see a lot of serious guys who just like American iron. No harm on either end I guess. That is unless the posers get all full of themselves.

You'll have a good time Rick. A friend recently got an Aprilia Futura. I ran into him at lunch the other day and he said "The more I ride the Futura the more I appreciat the Buell and what it does with what it is." He elaborated to say the Futura is a great bike but the Buell is great in different ways. But I wouldn't hesitate to work on my Buell. The Futura on the other hand would intimidate me even if I had a good tool set.

There's something to be said about brutally effective simplicity. That's what drew me to Buells in the first place. That and its character. The first time I saw (or heard?) one I looked expecting to see a Sportster and was blown away. If Buell didn't exist I'd be putting clip-ons and rearsets on a Sportster right now. Yuk.

Hi. I have a 2001 Blast and I'm now looking to trade up to an M2. I've found a untitiled 2000 and I'm wondering if you all could tell me if they're being fair on the pricing.

Here's the deal:

$6999 base
$87.50 doc fee
$785.00 freight
$286.00 Assembly
$194.00 Prep
--------
$8351.00

+ Tax 718.23
+ Lic 99.75
------------------------
$9158.45 Out the door.

Now, this is not accounting for my trade in.

What do you guys think? I'm thinking the 'prep', 'assembly' and 'doc fee' are ridiculous. Also, aren't freight charges standardized across the country? They want to charge me $785 in freight!! What's the REAL freight charges to Washington state?

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeffl,

I don't think I would pay more than $6,999 including prep, etc. Seeing as you can get a brand new 2002 for a few hundred more, it is too much. A local dealer in my area sells them at msrp with no freight or setup. I assume you are getting a full trade-in for your Blast, so maybe they are trying to recoupe from the other end. That's like car dealers that ask you how much you want to spend per month, when all you want to know is the price of the car.

It seems that slightly used '00 M2's can be had for around $6,000.

Leeaw,

Now, that's what I was thinking. I also got a price on a 2001 M2 while I was at the dealership. They want 10,224 out the door for a 2001. I would think they would want to get rid of the 2000 before their new shipment of 2002s get here so I expect a good (better than I listed) deal on it.

Anyone have any real gripes about the 2000 M2s?

I'd buy a slightly used 2000 but then I'd need to sell my blast first. Can't afford two right now, as much as I'd like to keep the blast for my wife to ride. I think she'd love it!

Thanks for your advice!

-Jeff

Jeff,
Head over to Eastside in Bellevue. They had a few M2's in stock in early July. At least you'll get another price comparison.

And I had no gripes about my 2000(early) M2. I rode it 2,500 miles from Milwaukee to Washington, and it didn't give me one problem the whole trip (except for getting rear-ended). Once you get a few miles on one, and take care of the "usual" problems (all relatively minor if you're comfortable with tools), it should be a great bike. It would also make a nice stable mate to the Blast if you can somehow swing keeping that one.

Mike,

I called Eastside. They don't have any 2000 M2s in stock any more. But, they're trying to work out a deal for me on a 2001. We'll see what they come up with.

Whatever you pay, I assure you it will be worth it. Even if my 99M2 were worth nothing at this point, it has been worth it!

In my area(south Wisconsin), the 01 M2s went out te door in the low/mid $8k's and their weren't alot to be had. Can't imagine a dealer selling 01 M2s for $7k due to the fact that the $1k rebate is long gone. Can't imagine 02s going for less than that also. Heck , a 02 grey bike/orange frame/PM wheels will list for almost $10k ! Very little used M2s available in my area, yet at this time of year, it is tough to sell a used one. My 00 M2 is for sale(see classifieds)at a real good price. If you can find a clean, low mile model in your area, check it out. I'm sure their are some well taken care of units out there. Good luck

So folks, here's the scoop from Eastside HD:

2001 M2

8995
+ tax, license, freight & setup
- 800 dealer rebate
= $9343

That's WAY better than the other dealer @ $10224

What do you think? Not bad, I think. Now if I can convice the wife....

What's the dealer's profit on an M2 at $8995? Anyone know?

Jeff,

It sounds reasonable. Most important thing is the dealer servicing your bike. If Eastside is good, do it!

Looks like Buell prices are going up! $8995 is above list price for an '01 isn't it? I paid $7,900+TTL out the door for my new '00 M2 back in September of '99.

I bought a new 2000 M2 (0 miles)August 15th of last year for $7408 out the door ($7000 base + $50 doc. fee + $8 title fee + $350 sales tax) here in Boise. They had 3 new ones and 1 demo sitting in the showroom most of last summer.

New guy here...but been lurking for a few weeks.

Me..about 10 years riding
80 something Yamaha Virago
96 Sportster
94 Yamaha V-Max
94 Kaw ZX-11
95 Kaw Vulcan 1500
00 Ultra Classic

I've been up and down the food chain, and I'm ready to have some fun. The Ultra is just too big to have fun on.
I was fortunate enough to get a test ride on an '01 X1W today. I liked it! ALOT! But, while at the dealer, I saw an S3. Question..is it the "same" bike with the exceptiion of handlebar, fairing, foot position and seat? I noticed its 10 pounds heavier also. The extra comfort of the S3 is appealing. BUT, is there anything else I should know? I take some weekend trips with between 2-4 hours in the saddle. Under an hour to work (frequently). And the small possibilty of a long road trip (1000-3000 miles) once a year. MOST of my saddle time will be under 2 hours. Also, I guess I'm a pretty hard rider, no matter what I'm on, I give it a good run everytime.
I'm not looking for an answer...just thoughts on the 2 bikes for a new Bueller.

GBag - Esentially, YES.
The S3 has a slightly relaxed fork rake angle so it is a little, very little less flickable than the X1 you tested.
Footpegs are lowered about 1 inch.
The seat won't pinch your balls like on the X1.

Otherwise it has the same fun engine, and quirks. Since you've had several HD's you are probably ready for the quirks. Keep the revs above 3K and the engine isolation system will keep everything smooth, and less quirks will appear.

I hate them damn quirks...

Yer right about that. Today I test drove a Duc ST4S. Smooth, nice fairing, stable in curves, zips up to 140 and still pulling, cruise at 90 and never know it, yaaawwwwwn, excuse me definately quirk free. Nice bike.

Greasebag,

I have a 1998 S1 that I bought new from a dealer here in Canada back in June for $9999.00 Canadian Funds. At the time still had a 98M2 and a 99S3 on the floor at a rock bottom price.

I spent 950km in the saddle yeaterday on the S1 and was a bit tired when I got back from the run. Only because I left at 7:30am and got back at 9:00pm. If I had to buy another Buell it would be the S3 seeing I already have the S1. I would not sell the S1 just because its SOOOOOOOOO much fun.

You won't be disappointed with either one.

JUST BUY ONE

Hmmm....For only being able to own one bike, the S3 is lookin good for me. But, I dunno..I'm still undecided. I still have to sell my Ultra, so I guess I have a little time to think about it. Seems no one wants to buy a bagger....at the end of summer in Illinois...go figure ..haha
Another question...How about a pipe, air box and chip? Any good KNOWN combos? The dealer suggested a Vance and Hines, Force air cleaner and I think he said a Screamin Eagle chip.
Oh...another thing..I noticed that the tank is an irregular shape where it meets the air box...Is there an after-market (reasonably priced) piece to straighten out that eyesore?

Thanks for the input. Can't wait to ride!

Question for the X1 Xperts. I am trying to get smart on these in a hurry. What I WANT is Molten Orange / Nuclear Blue frame and PM wheels. What I am trying to figure out is the difference across 1999-2001 models.

From what I have found searching this board, let me see if I understand this and please correct me if I'm missing something:

Between 1999 and 2000 the flywheels were lightened and the ECM was physically changed (I have found two sets of maps online: 1999 or 2000-2001). Aside from recall stuff (shock, muffler hanger, etc) are those the only 2 differences between 99 and 00?

I am down to three bikes:

2000 red stripe with a ton of accessories, including the race kit (with the Buell header and muffler), PM wheels, euro tail, shifter/brake pedals, tank bag, saddlebags. Clean but not as clean as the next bike $8400

1999 red, PM wheels, billet pulley, tank bag, V&H pipe, K&N, race ECM, bar end mirrors plus all the stock parts. So clean it SMELLS new. Absolutely flawless (and I looked at it closely). $7400

2000 Orange/Blue/PM wheels with a euro tail. Nothing else and it's $8500 (haven't looked at it yet).

I can decide which to buy but I'm wondering if there is anything substantial between the years. I'm leaning toward the '99 and just repainting it myself.

T.I.A.

Just my opinion, but if the first 2000 has Banke shifter and brake, and if eurotail is the fender eliminator kit, you've just about made up the $1000 difference there. I think the Buell Race Kit is the best quality piece out there. ( I've never had a problem in 2 years) The race stripe was a limited edition, and should be worth a bit more on resale as well. I'd take the 2000

Just my 2¢

Davet,

Thanks for the opinion. Actually, I agree with you, all things being equal. Unfortunately, they are not. The 2000 isn't as nice as the 1999 AND it's $1000 more. Yes, it has the parts but it won't help if the engine was flogged. That's why I need to figure out what other things I will miss on the 1999.

I read the MCN test of the 2000 and they stated that the front rotor changed for 2000 (more bolts) got ADJUSTABLE forks (I didn't check the '99) and some other minor upgrades. Those are what I'm trying to confirm.
