i recently melted a piston, i think the bottom part of my engine is ok, will a nallin 1250 kit work for me? what should i replace while i'm in there or will that do the trick? will i notice a performance increase with the 1250 kit alone?

1) Yes!
2) Well, if you're not going to port the heads, I'd at least freshen'em ... a valve job, check the springs, new high quality guide seals at a minimum.
3) Well, it's 4% more displacement, a half point of compression, and typically better ring seal, so yeah, it'll make a difference. If the motor is running out of breath on top, it may not make any more peak power, though ... theory of constraints and all that. The motor's power level is defined by what's holding it back, not the sum of the go-fast stuff in it. That's why most folks get their heads ported, too.

Feel free to call the shop or ping us if we can be of help or if you just have questions.

Trip:
I have about 1800 miles on my 1250 kit with stage 1 heads, 42 Mikuni, N4 cams, race header, and 20++ discs. My S2 runs GREAT!
Since Passion did a little more than melt a hole in the piston I needed the whole engine gone through Toasted Pistons. Everyone at NRS was very helpful and kept me informed of what was happening and when.

On that note....(1250 kit that is). Can anyone chime up about Nallins 88" kit? I'm trying to decide between the 1250 or go big with the 88! The thing I'm worrying about is that I'm an X1 rider! Do the DDFI handle the bigger bore? What about reliability? Anyone who has done the mods I would be interested in your opinion! Thanks in advance.

No personal experience with the x1 fuel injection 88's but i do love my carb 88. I know they are getting good numbers from the 1250 kits but I love the feel of the extra torque. I do believe that Aaron and Brian have a sweet running x1 dyno sheet on their site...120hp and 105tq...you would love it...Good luck and email me for my number if you want to talk offline...

Tripp,
You got a fair deal. Uncool to claim you were cheated in a public forum. You might ask Nallin Racing why your rods were unexpectedly expensive, in your mind.

uhh ... Blake ... thanks for the thought but I just checked his invoice, only thing he bought from us was a 1250 kit. He apparently hired out the install as well as the connecting rod replacement.

If we did it, believe me, that's not how we'd do it, changing '99 style rods. But whatever. I just want him to be happy with his 1250 kit.

We're doing more R&D on engine kits through this winter. Should have some nice stuff coming out soon.

BTW, a set of stock '99 M2 rods (24275-86A) lists for $305. That includes crankpin, bearings, and nuts. You can buy S&S rods for that! 'Course, then you'd need to rebalance.

Until recently, a complete '00 flywheel assembly (23899-00Y) listed for $341.20. Not overly complicated to fit one to a '99 motor, and it's a stronger & lighter assembly. But they recently jacked that up to $686. They do that sometimes when a part goes out of production.

Sounds like if someone stocked piled a few flywheel assemblies ,then stored them for a while is a worthy investment! Much better than the stock market ever did at its peak.

omg, i wasn't talking about nrhs, i had a local bike shop do the work(a shop i have spent over $25000.00)expecting a good deal and i was billed thirty hours with some of the parts outrageously priced. $389.00 for s&s rods amongst other things. btw nallin racing was great, justin was a big help with tech questions, i am very proud of my newly nallinized buell. i might have attempted the job myself if i had a place to do it. the work itself was good but oh so pricey...

Without looking it up, I can tell you that's somewhere near list price on those rods. They didn't ream you. Trust me, the dealer is at the tail end of the food chain on aftermarket parts and there ain't a hell of a lo of margin. You basically gotta charge list to make it worthwhile to even sell something.

30 hours may be a touch steep, but keep in mind, it's not a trvial job. We generally get 12 hours to do a motor that's delivered to us out of the bike, complete teardown and build-up. But we often spend more time on it than that. So I dunno, I'd be reluctant to get too bent out of shape over it. Particularly if things like crank balancing were a part of that.

Congrats on the 1250 kit. I'm a big fan of that particular kit.

yeah, i've gone over it again and i guess they did'nt spank me too bad, a few things at full list, i guess i did'nt really explain why i was a little miffed- there was a leak at the stator plug after i got the bike back and as you know, you have to open the primary up and stick the plug from the inside which is just labor really, and they would'nt do it, mind you i've spent over $25,000 at this place(bought 4 bikes from them)! so anyways i'm over it, i bought a house and finally have my own garage so if anything goes wrong with my bike at this point i got myself to blame!
my bike has about 750 miles or so on the new rebuild and it feels great(up to 3000rpm) so far, i can't wait to finish breaking her in and see what she's got being nallinized and all! i'll post again in the spring after break-in and dyno tuning! i'll also try to post a dyno chart!

ok, i now have about 2000 miles on the new top end, and wow what a difference, i never would have thought just a 4% increase in displacement would yield such a huge seat of the pants power increase! my cyclone absolutely flies! no problem cracking no clutch wheelies, nice and strong it even comes up in second! great power throughout the rpm range! i'll still report back with dyno results to much fun riding right now to go get it done!

Aaron,
So what's the deal with the Millenium cylinders? Has Nallin discontinued using them? What are they using now?

I purchased an S2 in January '04 and promptly had a Nallin 1250 Stage 1 kit installed. After break-in, around 4500 miles, the bike started using oil. It wasn't smoking or anything, just using about a quart per 300 miles. (the bike never felt as strong as my stock '98 S1W)
In June '04 I brought it back to the shop that installed the kit, and I'm still waiting for the bike. : (
Apparently, one of the valves wasn't closing completely, and the guides were replaced, but the big thing I feel was that the cylinders lining or coating had "streaked". The shop is just now getting the cylinders back from Millenium, but did not recieve the pistons. sigh, another setback. I've been without this bike now, a total of almost 6 months due to this upgrade...
I'm of the opinion I should have left the bike stock and just waited until it was worn out to put the kit in...

What can I say, I'm unhappy.
: ( : ( : ( : ( : ( : (

If the valves were not closing they and the seats would have been burned beyond doubt. There would be no "apparently" about it. I suggest you get a more definitive explanation from the shop who did the work on your engine.

Which heads did you use on the S2? You say stage 1 kit. Was that new thunderstorm heads or the original Sportster heads? Were the cams changed?

Blake ... I've looked into this issue and pinged Art privately. He's working through a dealer and s few things got lost in the translation. We asked for the heads back to make sure they weren't the source of the oil. The heads were in good shape. There was no valve seal issue. We didn't change the guides, they were fine. We did refurbish the heads and that includes new stem seals of course. We flowed them and they are an excellent set of heads. Flowing CNC ported heads is basically a redundant operation but I make sure we flow everything that goes out of the shop because I want the data.

Anyway, based on the description from the guy at the shop, this sure sounds like a plating failure in the cylinders. He sent them directly to Millennium for warranty, we never saw them. I didn't realize until I saw Art's post that the pistons also got damaged. We'll cover that on our end, including new rings and gaskets. Although this was a vendor issue, we sold the kit so I'm trying to take care of him. I've apologized profusely for the problem and I've taken steps to make sure this doesn't happen again.

bart, did you get your bike back yet? i'm interested to hear how it's running, my bikes been doing good for three thousand miles now so i figure my millenium parts are ok. i wonder how often that's happened with their cylinders and if that's part of the reason nallin sells axtell's now. i hope everything works out well with your bike, i know how you feel, my bikes been down for months at a time a few times, i hope you get it back and it's superfast and reliable. looking forward to seeing you in laconia next year!

No Tripp,
I still haven't gotten the bike back yet. It is 550 miles away in another state. (That's how far I have to go to find a reputable shop!) The bike IS together now, and they are breaking it in for me. So far so good, no leaks, no problems.
I never saw the damage to the cylinders, but millenium took care of the problem under warranty. I believe they just re-plated them. There were no problems with the pistons. They were sent with the cylinders, and Millenium had just mis-placed them, and failed to send them back with the cylinders. And I stand corrected on the heads, the seals were replaced, not the guides.
Nallin stepped up to the plate, and has indeed backed their product 100%. As stated above, Aaron contacted me immediately. He explained to me, the problems with the cylinder plating, and what they had done with the heads.
I feel alot better now, knowing what failed, and why. It's still been a long time, without the S2. But it's Milleniums fault, not Nallins. Nallin has been very helpful.
As to why Nallin switched to Axtell cylinders, from Millenium, I would think that the plating problem may have played a part. But I'm sure there were other issues that caused Nallin to go to Axtell. Quality is a big thing when your name is on the package. The plating failures have happened enough to be considered a common problem. Justin mentioned the cylinder failures when I first spoke with him, back in June.

Blake, The heads are Thunderstorm. I don't know which cams they put in. After looking up the kits on the Nallin Website, I think I got a stage 2, because I have the Dyna 2000 ignition. I don't see that or cams listed in the stage 1 kit.

Aaron,
Thanks for your quick response, and help getting this back together. I look forward to getting the S2 back, and grinning for miles on it. : )

Bart

well i hope you get it back soon! living in arizoni and all i imagine you get to ride year round so if all goes well you should be on the road shortly! that really sucks that the closest reputable shop is 550 miles away, i believe it though! there is a harley-oid mechanic guy on every corner around here but there is only one place i'll take my lucretia, luckily it's only 15 miles away(this is the shop that did the repairs when i blew my top end), they're a very expensive multi-brand dealer. the closest buell dealer is is about 75 miles away, i would'nt let them touch my bike with a ten foot pole though. i'm not surprised that nrhs took good care of you, i shopped a long time for a top end kit and went with nallin's due to several posts i read here on bad web saying that they stand behind their products. thanks for replying to my post, give us an update when you get up and running again!
