snapped 'er right off, the main shaft that is. And now I'm looking for suggestions as to the best manner in which to remove said shaft.

rumor has it there is an "easy" removal involving a main shaft w/o splitting the case.

For the tubers you don't need to split the cases!
There is a trapdoor behind the primary and clutch basket for removing the transmission and access the main shaft.

Correct, with a tuber the trans can come out via the trap door, allowing mainshaft access. The service manual for my 01-X1 describes the process; yours should be similar.

Special tools are needed, or would have to be fabricated. There is a bearing that will need to be replaced, as it gets damaged when the shaft is pressed out.

I might be inclined to remove all of the bits up to mainshaft removal, then take the bike to a dealer and have the shaft and bearing replaced. They are Sportster parts, after all. Could be cheaper and less hassel in the long run.

Hope this helps, Dave

Dealer. Ha! They sold me the parts (shaft, bearing, o-ring) but wouldn't touch the bike.

It's been sitting on the hoist all winter.

So it turns out w/ a broken main shaft the nut w/in the clutch merely spins, wedging the primaries accomplishes nothing. Any ideas how to bind the broken shaft enough to spin the nut off?

put a locking bar between front sprocket and clutch hub and using a impact wrench

It's not the clutch spinning that's an issue, the locking bar is in place, the impact wrench merely spins the nut faster. The main shaft is broken in half inside the case.

Well then is your only other option to cut or grind the nut off that holds the clutch hub.

if you are not splitting the case make sure to keep the grit out cutting or grinding. Holding the nut with a wrench or vise grips and drilling close to the diameter of the shaft will let the thread collapse a little then heat , locktite should have been used and it will release with heat.

Aha! I forgot I had two threads going.

I see now the hot-wrench is called for. Does this mean the clutch is also toast?

Going in to town today and see if I can find a narrow bit for the air chisel. Hope that works.
