Just drove a low miles (9,300) '02 X1 White Lightning...considering buying it and found that it was extremely hard to shift. Bike was in great condition and at a very reasonable price but the shifting issue left me wondering if to buy or not. It kept getting hung up between gears. No specific pattern. Took a lot of effort sometimes to get it from one gear to the next. drove it about 10 miles and it missed several shits in the process. Upon my return when shifting from 1st to 2nd...it hung up in neutral and when trying to shift to either 1st or 2nd...it ground severely in the process. I had to stop to shift into 1st...then go through the gears again. Not fun. I had an '07 Firebolt 12 that shifted fine. Love this '02 X1 but hate the shifting issue. Any suggestions???

Sounds like the primary chain is adjusted too tight. When pushing into first gear, it will grind. This is normal. What I do is roll it a little and then push into first gear.

Belt drive may be set too tight as well. You'll want to set the belt "scary loose", that is, so the belt deflection can easily be pushed onto the swing arm.

While cold, the chain, via the adjuster located underneath the primary case, should be set to 1/2" to 3/4" deflection at the tight spot of the primary chain. This will require putting the transmission into 5th gear and with the spark plugs out, rotating the rear wheel to find that tight spot. If you don't have a rear stand (like a Pit Bull) you'll need to roll the bike around.

I'd check out the adjuster shoe too. Old style vs. new style is much improved. You can source at an HD dealer.

I've got two X1's. When the primary chain and drive belt are set right, they are buttery to shift.
