Guys, I'm about to change the belt on my '97 S1. Is there anything else I should do while I've got it down (swingarm bushings, etc.)? Also, any tips and tricks I should know about? Thanks, Lee | ||

as long as you've got it apart (fairly easy) and have to get it together again, (a bit less so), I'd R&R the swingarm bearings and isolators as well -- pop a grease fitting in the swingarm too, so thaoses bearing can be lubed w/out dropping the arm but that's just me, really liking to add ease of maintenance to the bike | ||

Ditto on the swingarm bearing R&R. I recently replaced my isolators. And in disassembly... after the shock was disconnected... I saw that the swingarm movement was extremely rough. New isolators and bearing R&R sure made for a much better riding bike. Oh... yeah... also "ditto" on the "a bit less so" (getting it back together!). But if I can do it (with no special tools), anybody can. For "tips or tricks"... there's been a lot posted here over the years. Do a search. I believe there's a nice guide here somewhere. Make sure the engine is supported. I didn't hang the frame. I supported it from underneath, supported the motor, and dropped the swingarm block out. The only difficulty I had was pushing the block back in with the new isolators in place. I won't give you any tips on how to do that... as I probably did it the hard way! Steve | ||

Guys, I know this subjects been covered ad nauseum but does anyone know of a 'guide' for replacing the drive belt on a tuber (pre 99 frame)? I've done a search but am not having any luck. The service manual says to remove the oil tank, exhaust and a lot of other stuff I don't 'think' is necessary and was hoping someone had posted their results. Thanks a million. Lee | ||

Lee -- while it's possible to drop the arm w/out removing the oil tank, it really does make it easier -- Buellistic always has great advice (LaFayette, wouldja send me the pics and field-expediant tool info as well, sir? spokes10@aol.com -- thanks a million) lastly, AmericanThunderbike.org has a great writeup on this very topic | ||

I thought Buell or someone recently had come up with a tool to spread the frame enough to squeeze the right side isolator in or out? I've also heard of the frame spread apart with the aid of a jack or porta-power. Rocket | ||

Rocket -- I believe there IS an offical HD tool for this purpose -- I've also seen folks spread the frame with hydro power -- I've also seen one of those frames not settle back to where it used ta was, and have it on good authority that "spreading" the frame is not a good idea -- HD's part seemingily compresses the isolators, rather thn spread the frame, from what I'm told ATC's site's procedure shows how to make a 2 bit tool (actually, about a 3 dollars cash american tool, what's that these days, abour 4.75 pounds?) to compersses the isos, and it works great (I know from personal experience) -- I know nothing else on the topic, so I will uncharacteristically hush up ;-} | ||

Well John my experience tells me the frame is bloody strong across the isolator mounts and if I were going to spread it I'd be amazed it would spread at all but if it did I wouldn't want to spread it anymore more than the thickness of the belt - if at all. Your advice sounds spot on - don't do it! Now a tool that compresses the isolators, that I have to see, own one day soon maybe. Thanks for the info. Rocket | ||
