I have a 2008 Ulysses touring model and I'm interested in changing to the X forks. I've got a line on a cheap 2006 XB12X donor, but I'm not quite clear if these folks would bolt on to a 2008 touring model. *What are the differences between model years 2006 and 2008 besides the engine changes? *Did fork diameters change in the X models from 2006 to 2008? How about spring rate? *Was the rear shock different on the X model and will it bolt on the touring model? I did a little bit of Googling on these questions but read some conflicting information. The X forks and shock from a 2006 will bolt right onto it, no other changes needed other than the kickstand. The 2006/7 XB12X used 43MM forks, but for 2008 they switched to 47MM forks (The XB12XP was introduced for 2009, uses the same suspension as the X). The new forks are accompanied by different trees which push the forks out a little to improve side to side steering lock, which makes it easier to maneuver the bike in low speed situations. The XB12XT however, did not get the 47MM forks, it retained the 43MM setup including trees like the 06/07 X had, but the forks and shock were slightly different to provide the lower height that the XT has. Therefore the 06/07 X shock and forks will slide right into the stock XT trees and mounting points, no modifications needed. All 2006-2010 XB12X and XB12XP use the same rear shock, it was not changed when the forks were. If you do get the 2006 forks, I recommend changing the springs in them. One of the complaints of the 2006 model was excessive fork dive, so for 2007 they switched to progressive springs that reduce dive. The springs are only a couple dollars each, but require you to disassemble the forks to install them. Personally I would be doing that regardless before installing used forks, that way I know everything is fresh and up to par. I can't comment on spring rate numbers, but they are very likely different between X and XT. As someone who has had both, the X suspension is way plusher, even with settings set on the stiff side. | ||

Good to see your post from 2016 Froggy, I just bought the '08 XT model long distance after solid discussion about X vs. XT with the seller... I owned the X, loved riding it but couldn't enjoy it in town or in a parking lot. I got the new bike off of the truck, threw a leg over, and could barely touch the ground. Measured the forks at 47mm and 7" ground clearance, looks like someone put luggage on an X and called it XT. | ||

Froggy mentioned it but remember the X forks will be longer or at least set up to ride higher so you will want the corresponding shock or you'll really change the geometry. |
