This winter I'll be splitting the cases on my XB12Ss to replace a busted transmission.

What else would be good to check or replace while I am in there?

Thinking about a 1250 kit but then again not really because I have another bike with more power if that is what I really want. I just want the Buell to run.

So there, what would be a good idea to go over?

Thanks.

What year? If one made before 08, and I was splitting the cases, I would put in the new style crank.

Crank balance?
Knife edge crank?
Polish everything?
Forged pistons?
Lighter con rods?

2006

V74- I've been thinking about picking up some 9 pistons but am not sure. I wish I had paid more attention to all the motor talk over the years so I had a better idea of what I need to do. I never had the budget to get into big internal work so I put it out of my mind. Would new piston ring and valve seals be a good idea? I'm more asking for things to replace to keep it reliable and not have to go back in for while. For example, I don't want to split the case and fix the tranny, bolt it all up and then in 1,000 miles find out there is a circlip, spring, washer, seal, etc that doesn't like to be reused and is bad and I have to go to all the trouble and tear it all down to fix a $5 part. I hope that helps clarify my intention.

At this point the Buell will just be a fun back up bike for an un reliable piece of crap KTM. So I'm not looking for monster power, just some grins and reliability. Who would have thought, my Buell would be my reliable bike.

Thanks for the responses. My ZTL2 just showed up as have some new color bodywork pieces and other odds and ends. I'm getting excited to change the colors and freshen the bike up. It's been 4 years since it ran with all 5 gears and 4 since it's been started!!!! Yikes! Time flies!
