concerning a Lightening X1
Have any of you put the later valve covers on your HD motor? The ones that use a PVC valve so you can dump the center plates and the side engine breathers into the air cleaner? I need to know something.

I did this and vented the PVC valves into a catch can. But after that, I had oil splatter coming out of the trans/side cover breather. Related problem, I don't know. It was only happening at about 80 mph.

I had a shop review the situation and he went back to the side breathers and ran them back into the air cleaner. The same thing I was trying to get away from because oil would drip from the air cleaner onto my leg. Some oil was working its way out instead of in toward the intakes. Now, still with my PVC's hooked up, he says he road it and no oil from the trans case breather. But my center head plates are still removed??? I am not sure you can do that because the center head plate is what directs the extra oil that builds up in the head. And why can't the PVC's do the trick because they are approx the same size outlets as the side ports. It is not a question on them being to small.
Like I said earlier, I am not sure my side cover oil splatter is related to my change over to the PVC valves. But I am sure interested if anyone else has made t he conversion and what the results were. Alone with comments on running side port vents w/o a center plate on he head.

Frankly, I am not sure this guy knows what a PVC valve is and not sure he knows what a center plate was designed for.

If you over fill the OIL TANK or TRANSMISSION the engine will PUKE the excess oil out until the engine reaches its happy level ...

OIL SYSTEM Class 101, just PM me for a copy ...

NEVER run OIL LINES to the CARB. BACK PLATE, always to a catch container ...

Always run the transmission breather to a catch container !!!

Once again -
Has anyone changed over to PVC valves on a Buell and eliminated the center plate on the heads?.

Anybody see anything wrong with running both breathers - side or PVC, into one line? Would that create a back up of pressure?

Can anyone explain the mechanical reasoning for the center head plate on the Sporster engines?

Have a 97 S3T ...

Installed 2000 BLAST PVC breathers in my OEM ROCKER COVERS(XB's were not out yet)...

The breathers in the rocker arm covers are a PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT and the best way to go ...

It was there to hold the VALVE, umbrella PN 26856-89(head breather valve)...

Did you run the 2 PVC's into one and then a catch can? Any pressure issues?

did you run both PVC valves into one before the catch can? Any backup pressure issues.
Remember, mine only occur at 80mph +/-. FYI, my oil levels are fine.

Did you remove the center plate that holds the little oil runoff flapper valve?

Ran all my breather hoses individually to one catch container ...

Used a BLACK Harley-Davidson quart oil container running all hoses into bottom of container and attached behind the license plate mount on my 97 S3T ...

Made a 3 inch stand pipe in the container cap with the hose a little below the license plate mount ...

After 111,819.6 mils as of the last ride there is very little water/oil mess in the catch container when "i" take the cap off to check ...

Only removed the VALVE, umbrellas and used solid bolts to hold air cleaner back plate on ...

I want to be sure I understand here.
you did NOT remove the plate with the umbrella valves (plate the valve are in). You ONLY took the valves out of the plate and left the plate?

I am not sure I would have clearance to do that. With the valve plate removed, I just have room and I had to do a tinny bit of grinding/filing to the front cover to clear the engine upper mount.

Sorry, I have just got to be sure here since no one else has chimed in about doing this conversion. I believe I saw a bike with the valve plate removed so that is what I did.

I guess one of the things I need is confirmation on what that plate would be for if the valves are removed??? My impression of the plate is it is an oil dame and the valves are the way to regulate the oil back into the bottom end.

When I did my '01 X-1, I took off the OE cover and the spacer. Had to do a small amount of filing to get the front XB cover to clear the motor mount. Ran both PCV valves into one line, and ran that towards the rear. I followed another member in creating a 'self-lubricating sidestand'. Perhaps not the best choice, but stopped the right knee oil stain issue. No other problems.

I'm not sure there would be enough clearance under the fuel tank for the valve if the spacer were left on . . . .

I suspect if the trans/primary vent is spewing, the crankshaft oil seal is beginning to leak, and only doing so at/above 80MPH. Doubt it would be directly related to changing rocker box covers. Might do to recheck the fluid level in the primary.

Hope this helps, Dave

thank you.

So you are now running the two valves into one hose and into your can / bottle. What I was doing, but perhaps my can was to restrictive. Or, the issues are not related.

If you ever took photos of the catch can you made and have time to post, please do. Or send to jc007@q,con I am trying to picture it now, but am not sure what a "3 inch stand pipe" is.

To recap: Yes, I removed the spacer, or plate, if you prefer. Yes, I ran a line from one valve to the next, and a single line from there to the rear. No, I did not use a catch can; just let the open line hang near the exh pipe outlet.
FWIW, on another bike I got an aftermarket 'bridge' (for a Sportster) that fits the breather bolts, and ran that to a catch can. Got the can from Al, at American Sport Bike. Just checked his site, and that can is not available at this time due to vendor issues.
I believe your issues are not related. Check your primary oil level. I think your crankshaft seal is starting to leak.
I have no idea where the "3 inch stand pipe" came from. That comment didn't come from me.
Hope this helps, Dave

Jeff,
Tons of us have done the conversion. I've got them on 2 S2's, an S1, 2 M2's and an X1.
3 are mine the others are friends.
No issues at all on any of them. They all have the front running to a "T" the rear running to the side fitting of the "T and the remaining runs to a catch can or a dump line (I ran a tube down the length of bottom of the swing arm on the S2's to get the the mist away from the tire.).
There are tons of threads here that of lots of info and pictures.

If you are getting puking from the trans breather you have other issues. Buellistic mentioned a couple of them. Over filling either hole will do it as will a bad primary crank seal.

Ah, now I understand. The comment came from Buellistic, and I did'nt remember it. Must be a case of Oldtimers, LOL.

Anyway, picture a jar with a lid on it. One hole in the jar lid goes to a pipe, on the inside of the jar, that extends almost to the jar bottom. The line from the PCV valves goes to this pipe. The other goes to a short pipe that just barely extends into the jar. A breather filter goes on this pipe.

The long tube or pipe is the stand pipe spoken about. The assembly is a catch can. You can make one from virtually any container with a lid. Putting a bit of steel wool halfway up, or a piece of screen between the inlet (stand) pipe and the outlet pipe can be helpful. Allows any mist to separate out and settle to the bottom.

Hope this helps, Dave
