I didn't want to hijack the other leaking thread. I just put my XB together and within 100 miles, I have a significant leak from the front (Cometic) base gasket. I've obviously done something wrong. I would like to avoid a repeat on what ever that might have been (rotating the engine is tedious at best). Any ideas what I may have screwed up? | ||

Did you follow the torque sequence and specs for the head bolts from the manual? And were the gasket and mating surfaces perfectly clean? Those are the two most common problems... | ||

I followed the torque sequence. The cylinders were new. I will make sure to check thoroughly the engine surface. Someone suggested I try James gaskets. (Message edited by shadow-racerx1 on July 16, 2015) | ||

Does cometic gaskets have an "upside down" position? Could that be an issue? | ||

I used Cometics and thought they were very well made, and I had no problems... for what that's worth. I don't recall if those gaskets are completely symmetrical or not. | ||

I'm using 9 pistons with a 12 crank. Would the higher compression be an issue? | ||

I've used Cometics many times with no issues. Higher compression "could" cause a problem if there were other issues like something stuck on the case gasket surface. | ||

For the record... after tearing everything down... it turned out to be a tear in the back of the pushrod base gasket. Now I'm worries I should have reringed/rehoned everything (100 miles into breakin.) | ||

pushrod base gasket - I switched to zippers adjustable tubes, just tubes, not the pushrods itself - on good advice from Jolly. Fairly easy to install yourself, with only top end tear down to deal with. no leaks. This of course is on my tuber, so not sure what you are riding (Message edited by bluebueller on September 23, 2015) |
