No rain here in Phoenix. Just 100+ degree heat. It's nice riding weather if you avoid mid-day riding. .....but, it's a dry heat ; ) !!

S1B:

My buddie's '96 S1 still has the original battery but it is getting very difficult to start. My '96 S1 that I got in Dec. of '95 is on its 3rd battery.

Bike batteries are a mysterious creature. Bike batteries in most cases are good for a year. It can be milked for more life but anything after a year is just good fortune. Batteries drain even when the bike is shut off. Put a amp meter between the negative wire and the battery terminal with the bike shut off and you will read a small current flowing. Trickle charging after every ride may help some but probably isn't worth the electric bill or the time spent reconnecting the battery for every ride. I have noticed that the more often you ride the longer the battery lasts. Keeping the battery at room temperature during winter months helps also.

My OEM battery has lasted 1 yr and 10 months but is showing signs of giving up. This is the longest I've had a battery last with out milking it for more life.

AB:

This winter I had difficulty staring my bike and thought the battery had given up. Turns out these bike batteries are very sensitive to temperature. If left outside overnight the bike would not start with overnight temps in the 30's.

To any of you that did the tach uprade for the '00 m2,
I picked up the parts today. I used the part numbers straight out of the 2001 parts book but the tach I got has the extra lights. Did they mis-package it or can you not get the one w/out the lights? Also, if I do keep this, does anyone know if I can put a fuel sensor on to make the fuel light work? Also, instead of using the rubber gauge cushion part # suggested in the archives, I ordered the one that was listed in the book (Y0604.01A3) and it fits perfectly. Also tell me if these connection are right. orange-3, Pink-7 and black-10. I assume the yellow and black/yellow can just be taped up. Thanks for any help.

I have a problem, sort of.

My 00 X-1 check engine light started coming on while riding @ about 3000 rpm for very long, if I run it up in the revs hard light goes out, or if I shut bike off then back on light stays out for a while. Any-one have any Idea what gives? bike seems to run just fine, light on or off.

I ALSO HAVE A SMALL PROBLEM. I GOT A 130/125W H-4 HYPER HALOGEN/XENON BULB FROM A.S.B. AND THE LOW BEAM BURNT OUT IN ABOUT 2-3 HOURS OF RUN TIME. THEY REPLACED IT FOR ME.THE NEXT ONE LASTED ABOUT 2 HOURS THEN LOW BEAM BURNT OUT. BOTH TIMES I PUT MY STOCK BULB BACK IN AND IT WORKS.I TALKED TO TAT AND AM GOING TO TRY SOME WIRE MESSING AROUND BUT WE ARN'T SURE WHY THIS IS HAPPENING.WHEN THE LIGHT WORKED IT WAS GREAT,A LOT BETTER THAN THE STOCK ONE.

Question was asked about a replacement battery for S1's over on ATC, someone mentioned Westco Battery.

They didn't have Buells listed, but I sent them mail and they responded thusly. I have not bought/installed one to verify, but likely will be soon. Any experiences out there?

My oil pressure light blinks on and off intermittently (and erratically)at idle now. It never did before. I'm posting this question here as I'm guessing my problem is an electrical one. Once off idle and riding, it goes off. Also, there are a few times when it doesn't come on at all at idle, but it usually does blink at idle. The bike runs great, doesn't run hot, and burns no oil. The idle speed is right around 1000.

I checked and cleaned the switch connection directly under the filter mount and I even pulled, checked, and cleaned the check ball and spring (as recommended in the manual).

I'm not good at electrical work.. I'm guessing that I need to trace the wiring and check all the connectors. I'm hoping maybe someone has had a similar experience and can help me out before I have to take it back to the shop. By the way, it never blinked until I picked it up from the shop the other day. Work they did involved removing and replacing the cams... but I don't see where work in that area would cause the intermittent light. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanx.

Steve

LOL... no Tripper... not more cam. Actually... I had a lifter "gone bad" take a cam out! Or... it could have been vice versa. Anyway... the cam profiles are the same. Hmmmm... fuel sniffing junkie... well.. yes... that I might be!

Steve

P.S. Dave... what? No suggestions for my oil light problem?? As much as I love and use the "New Messages" utility... I don't think enough people use it that questions tucked away in the knowledge vault get enough exposure (unless it's in the "more power" or "dyno" topics ). Think I'll try copying my questions to the GDB. Sorry Blake!

Hi Steve: Your right, everyone needs to use the NEW MESSAGE function. Much easier way to catch all of the good stuff happenin here.

Your flashing light scares me. Since you already cleaned the the contacts at the sensor you are on the right track going back into the harness. The vibration at idle may be causing an intermittent connection at any connector along the way which I sense you are suspecting. What scares me is, what if the oil pressure really IS low? Anyone here have a quick way to test the pressure? (PAMMY!)

I know you are an oil level freak so you checked that. Change the filter just for cheap insurance.

OK, here's a suggestion:
My bike shakes worse at 1500. Pull the enrichener to raise the idle. This will also raise the pumping pressure slightly.
More flashes or less?
More flashes = vibration, bad connection.
Less flashes = pressure sensing unit is doing it's job properly. You have low oil pressure at idle. Since the light stays out in the face of more vibration you have eliminated the vibration suspect.
disclaimer: there are flaws in the above test
Good Luck

I changed the oil and filter last night Dave. And yes... in addition to being a fuel sniffing junkie... I'm also an oil level freak!

I'm certainly hoping it's an electrical problem. But... the message boards have come through once more and I've got some things to try when I get home. Hope it's a simple fix.

Thanx for the assistance.

alright guys here is an easy one for you,
On the ride home from work the other day, my 2k x1 started sputtering, along with the speedo needle dropping in and out. So dummy me turns off the bike to call the babysitter to let her know i'm having problems and now the bike won't start. Sometimes i get indicaters and sometimes not, when i do get them and try to start it i get a click. So i broke out the fluke meter and the battery reads 11 volts, so is that my problem?
and if so does anyone know if that would be covered under warrenty?

Thanks
Jake

Jake,
Indicates a battery to me. Jump it and check the voltage at the battery while running. Chances are you've got a bad voltage regulator and it fried your battery. My dealer replaced the vr but just charged the battery, 1 month later I had to pay for the new battery on a bike that was only a few months old. If it is the vr insist on a new battery at the same time.

Dead battery. 11 volts isn't enough to run the bike. Since your battery went dead before the warranty is up (1yr) I'd look for the cause. Usually batteries give little warnings weeks before giving up the ghost. Since yours happened all at once, check your whole charging system.

My gauges and lights did the same flicker dance yours did. 15 miles before this happened I heard a gravelly sound come and go from the primary case and didn't think much about it. I charged the battery and got another 15 miles and the same flicker dance happened again. I did some trouble shooting procedures and concluded that the stator had gone bad. Come to find out I was right but it was worse than I thought. The stator was chewed into little pieces and scattered all over the gear box. The gearbox was taken out and cleaned up but I'm still finding little pieces of stator in the primary fluid and I'm on the 5th fluid change in a years time. It probably wouldn't have been as bad if I hadn't put the extra mileage on it after having the battery go dead the first time.

Motorcycle batteries are good for one year. Anything after that is considered good luck and money saved.

Hope it's just a bad battery but check your charging system anyway.

Duck,

Check out this link to a January thread in the KV.

A bunch of us have done the conversaion with no problems. Just make sure you get the wires in the correct slot and you wont have any problems.

Duck,
I just installed my tach 2 days ago. Piece of cake. Also, if you didn't get the rubber tach cushions, part # Y0604.01A3 is the one you want. They are for the '01 dash. Get two of them.

A few times people have mentioned bicycle speedos as a viable alternative. Which ones, where from and how do they work (and as always, how much)?

Ralph,
Just be sure of what the max speed is, some of the bicycle computers only register up to 50mph which is fine for something you pedal.
I think the ones people are mounting on their motorcycles are sold thru dirt bike shops.

Thanks Neil. Consider it acted on. Unfortunatly they're back ordered. I'll let you know how it goes when I get it. I think I can come up with a slightly better mount than the Sport Riders did. Maybe :)

Thank you Mike, but it had occured to me to look at the limit of the device. As a matter of fact that is half of the problem I'm trying to fix.

Hey Guys,
My electrical problem turned out to be a internaly grounded battery... imagine that! Well I'm not complaining to much it was still under warrenty. But I can't say enough good things about Hal's in New Berlin, that place rocks in service, parts available, knowledge, and they have very cute chicks working for them!!!(bonus)
Oh yeah woodstock & lakeshore hd still suck!

ya got that right on Laake Shore . . . . . they might have 20 Buells on the showroom floor, but their service department looks at them like they're from mars . . . . .they've done 2 rounds of warranty work for me (blown fork seal and 2001 shock upgrade), and I've had to tighten the fasteners they touched, realign the forks and blast 2.5 pounds of grease of parts of the bike they didn't have to fool with . . . . ah well . . . .when you sell all the baggers you can get a hold of to the shriners, I guess the odd M2 doesn't count for much
