I'm pre-emptively replacing the front brake pads (they've started squealing) and I've gone ahead and pulled the caliper off (leaving it attached to the brake line since the brake fluid was recently replaced). However, the Blast seems to be a bit weird. I can't actually pull the caliber away from the wheel without removing the pads...

Which means I would have to mount the caliper back to the wheel before putting the new pads on! That seems like it is more difficult than necessary, as I'll have to balance the mounting spring and everything back on the wheel while sliding the pin back in.

Also, when I put it all back together off of the wheel so I know where everything goes, the pads are very loose... did I miss a part somewhere that springs them back apart?

First, get with Al at American Sport Bike and get a service manual. Most important tool in the box.

On my bikes (none a Blast) the pads can be removed without taking the caliper off. On the XB, I believe the lower bolt needs to be removed, and the upper loosened for the pads to come out.

In most cases, the pads have to come out before there is enough clearance to remove the caliper. Even then, the pistons often have to be pushed in to get the caliper off.

The brake disk is what keeps the pads apart.

Try loosely mounting the caliper with the upper bolt and then assemble the rest of the parts.

Check in with the Thumper Forum for more, and most likely much better, info.

And Most Important Of All, once the brake is back together, pump the lever until the pistons have pushed the pads back against the disk. Nothing like riding off and applying front brake and finding there isn't one. Been there, done that.

Hope this helps, Dave
