Hey guys, I have a 2009 1125R that I just traded a Sportster for. I love the bike but I'm getting bummed and frustrated. It has left me stranded several times this week. When it isles I can watch the voltage drop on the display. But at speed it charges.... When it drops to around 11.7 volts the check engine light comes on. When I speed the engine RPM up the bike starts to charge and the check engine light goes off. Last night I shut it off at 12.1 volts and tried to start it about half an hour later to no avail. I had to get a jump to ride back home. It only seems to.do.this after short distances. Is this normal?

I forgot to mention that I put in a new battery on Monday.

Sounds like the 2009 Charging system failure, needing a New Stator and or rotor perhaps even a Voltage Reg. all 3 someone will chime in with more info for ya... But 09 was a year that were known for these plms.

It is likely the stator has failed, it is a weak spot on the 2009/2010 1125 models. The stator is what keeps the battery charged, if it is not outputting enough voltage, the bike will eventually stall. If the 2009/10 1125 is ridden at low RPMs constantly, it does not get sufficient oil cooling for the stator, eventually resulting it it failing.

Good news is, there is a permanent fix, Erik Buell Racing does a modification to the rotor cup, which allows it to provide proper oil cooling to the stator at all RPMs. The modified rotor plus a rewound stator permanently fixes the issue.

You can read more about it on the 1125 Board

Maybe the bike has the "Harley Fix" that involves the relay that open-circuits 1/3 of the 3-phase charging circuit at lower revs resulting in little or no charging below approx 3 grand but charging above that point. And if it does have the relay, the relay could be burned out and needing replacement.

Even so, that is a temporary solution and the proper course of action is to go with the posters above if the stator proves to be failed.

Thanks guys!!!! Got it fixed. It was the stator issue and Iwent ahead and had the OEM parts put back in it because when I bought the bike I also got a two year warranty. I've looked into the permanent fix and it looks like it's something I will probably do once the bike is out of warranty. I tried to get them to do the permanent fix for me but sadly they will only put in OEM parts.

Now that it's running and charging I've noticed something new. When I turn it off after running, the cooling fan continues for a few moments.... That's all well and good I know. But after it shuts down I hear a slight beep and what sounds like a pump running. It cycles off and on for awhile..... Last night when I put it in the garage was the first I'd heard it. It continued for several minutes before I went in for the night I didn't hear it stop and didn't have an opportunity to check it out this morning. Any ideas??!?

The noise you hear after shutting off is the fuel pump cycling on and off for a short while. This is done, I believe, to keep the fuel rail pressurized which can prevent vapor lock and hard hot restarting. It's normal. Don't worry about it.

Yep that is the fuel pump doing its thing, it will do it for up to 10 minutes. Go on a group ride with other Buellers and stop somewhere for lunch, once the fans stop it sounds like some kind of droid convention : )

Hello again guys. I have another question for you awesomely brilliant buell enthusiasts! At about 4500 RPMs I hear a sound that almost sounds like the cooling fan has something in the blades..... But only when riding. In neutral at 4500 RPMs it doesn't do it.

Tommy did you figure out what the noise was?

As for the wheels, I use S100 wheel cleaner, works fantastic.
