So I just picked up a 2007 Super TT with "unknown issue" and after tear down found rear rod/piston is trashed. From a little research it appears that 07 had an issue with cranks. Best bet for me is probly just to buy a good used engine. What years swap?

06 and 07 XB12 motors will drop right in, other years will require changing other parts but would be doable. 08+ requires a significant number of part changes so I would avoid them unless you are willing to make a large project out of it.

What would other year engines require? I think they changed some things from the early models like the cam cover, etc? Are all the parts needed to change from a pre-06 engine into this bike already on my 07 engine?

Also are the newer engines better than the older ones? More power or improvements in design? Last one i had was an 03. I heard something about an upgraded oil pump but i dont know what year that was implemented.

Actually as I was doing more thinking about it, you could use an 04/05 XB12 motor and it will also drop right in no problem. The biggest difference between that and an 06 or 07 motor is the transmission, they changed the design of it, the 06 and up bikes use the newer style transmission which is less clunky. The engine cases are different so swapping the transmission is not practical. There is a difference with the oil line connections between 05 and 06, so you would need custom oil lines to the swingarm.

If you did get an 04/05 or even 06 motor, take the oil pump gears out of the 07 motor, the 07 has a beefier design that lasts longer.

08 motor had significant changes including like you mention new cam cover, beefier crank, upgraded oiling system, new fuel injection system, and higher redline. Would need to change things like the wiring harness, throttle body, throttle cables, ECM and so on to use the newer motor. It can be done (Hughlysses did it when his 07 nuked the crank), it is just expensive and involved.

Ok so 04-05 will swap right in with the exception of the oil lines going to the swingarm and 06 is the same as 07 correct? Id like to stick with the same model engine but id have to find an 06 since obviously im weary of 07 motors since there is no way of knowing if it has the crank issue or not.

I havent taken it off but i highly doubt the oil pump on my 07 motor is any good as the whole engine is trashed. The rear rod is bent at about a 30 degree angle and half the piston/rings is missing including the skirt. The head was also damaged.

You can also get your cases re-machined, and a new bigger crank put in. That would let you keep the 07 engine, but have a longer term fix. You still wouldn't have the updated 08 and up oiling system though.

Pricey, but so is a new engine.

Ill have to evaluate my options. A good used engine is roughly $1500 so if i can rebuild this one better for about the same cost i might go that route. Im not sure if there is damage to the cases though. Seen a pic, i believe on here, of an 07 with the bad crank and it broke the cases around the flywheel.
