was cruising about 45 and the bike died and the battery was very hot. Bought a new battery and hooked up the ground and then just touched the pos cable on the pos side of battery and there was a good spark, Does this sound like a regulator? Thank you

It certainly seems like a short circuit somewhere. It could be in the regulator or any of the wires connected to the positive side of the battery.

The thing to do is to isolate the circuits one by one until the short goes away. But before you go about doing this, please be aware that sparks around the battery can result in a nasty explosion that's bad for your health.

So the smart thing for this troubleshooting episode would be to first disconnect the negative battery cable from where it connects to the bike's frame. Next, connect both battery cables to the battery. Then, when you want to start checking isolated circuits, touch the disconnected negative battery cable to the bike frame to see if there is a spark. That way any spark won't be close enough to blow up the battery.

If you suspect the VR, disconnect it and check for sparks like mentioned above.

If doesn't spark, then you've pretty much found the cause.

Was the old battery swollen in any way? Sounds like overcharging / failed regulator.
