Hi everyone!

I have a '05 XB9R with 5400 miles. My check engine light has been on, I checked and it flashed the 36 code. Which is something to do with my fan? I've checked out the other posts regarding error 36,
BUT.. are these issues caused by error 36 as well?! (just happened yesterday)
1.) while riding, my bike would turn on and off and on again (for 20 mins, I was on my way to work). everything would go dead for a second or so, then turn back on like nothing happened (I thought it had to be something electrical), a few times it didn't turn back on right away so I had to pull over and wait like 10 seconds
2.) but then, bike went dead at a stop light and I had to push it onto the sidewalk. got no electrical response, but after 5 minutes everything was fine again

haven't rode it since this happened yesterday, I had the bike towed to my work and my boss is letting me leave it there for now. it starts up fine and I rode it around the parking lot no problem, but I'm worried it'll shut off on me again while actually riding, the closet motorcycle shop is 30 minutes away.

can a fan issue be causing my bike to shut off and then back on while riding like that? Other people suggested that maybe it is a bad BAS or something wrong with my coils, but the only error code I'm getting is 36.
I'm not good with motorcycles and definitely need to be led by the hand on this one.
Please help!! Thanks everyone!

Did you have to cycle the ignition to get it to turn back on? If so, that could be the bank angle sensor.

If not, I'd be looking at the wiring harness / ECM / ignition switch / battery connections.

thanks for the reply!
it would turn back on by itself within a few seconds, but a few times it went full dead and I had to pull off and wait and cycle the ignition.
how would I know if the ECM is bad?

how would I know if the ECM is bad.I hate to say it some times trial and error. Dosn't hurt to have a backup if you got the funding. Remember you could always sell .

Wiggle the connectors with your fingers and see if you can reproduce the problem.

The ECM's don't die electrically (usually), the solder cracks on the pins for the connectors.

Hi All!

I could never sell my Buell, I love it too much!! haha

I think I fixed the problem with the bike shutting on and off while riding. I took out all the connections to the battery and cleaned them. I tested the battery itself and it said it's dead, I couldn't even charge it or jump it (this is a pretty new battery, it must've failed, Wal Mart...) so i replaced it with a new Harley battery. The battery from advanced auto parts cost more than Harley!
So I've rode around 100 miles without an issue but my error 36 is still flashing, the fan doesn't turn on anymore

Good lesson to all get those grounds clean and have the battery tested at batterys plus etc.. or get your own tester.Let us no about the fan if it was bad or if you find another issue with it.

It wouldn't hurt to have a backup fan. Check the fan fuse,I would back prope the fan connector.,Idle the bike and see if your getting voltage to the fan after the engine heats up .IF you get volts and fan dosn't work get new fan.If no volts check wiring per maintenace manual. You can also remove fan from bike and hook it up to the battery to see if it works. If it works check the wiring.

To add to the above,I don't think from your info that your ECM is the issue.I do know if the bike Idles long enough the fan should come on.Thats why I mention the above info.If your not getting a fan code the ecm detects that the fan circuit is good but that dosn't mean the fan is working.

the fan is working, it must be a bad ground. but here's something weird.. when I first started it up the CEL was on, error 36, but then I started spinning the fan with my finger and then the CEL went out and that whole ride my fan was good and spinning. When I came back from the ride, the fan was going through the same shut off phases but sounded different than before, rather than a low whinning sound of the spinning fan, it sounded clunky. then when I took it out again the CEL was back on and the fan wouldn't turn on, after I got back from that ride and shut down, still no fan, so I took the seat off and spun the fan again with my finger and the fan started spinning and going through the normal shut off phases.
What does this mean...?

Now that your and expert removing and replacing the fan get a new one and make sure you don't get the O2 sensor wire caught in the fan like somebody I know.\ did.{me}.I think thats your problem.
