I bought a '03 XB9R with 17k miles on it last year. About 3k miles later i started to notice a "ticking" noise in the bottom end on the right side that changed with RPM. When i shut the motor off it made a bit of a "knock" noise. I took it to a guy that works on old sportys, he said it sounded like bottom end noise. Got advice from a guy at work that rides buells and he said it sounded normal, took it back to the dealership that i bought it from and tech said it sounded normal.

however, i did check oil/filter last year for flakes/silver and didnt see anything out of the ordinary. had the motorcycle on stand and did my best to check "out of round" of end of crankshaft on left side of bike and only got a variance of +/-.001. checked primary belt tension and adjusted it to 5/8" to 3/4". so i rode the rest of the year not paying attention to it.

Started to ride this year, bike currently has about 24k miles on it now, and noise seemed a little more noticeable. did another oil change...nothin noticable. Used Fram filter and 20w-50 castrol high mileage oil and noise seems to be a smidge bit louder now. Read some forums about valve noise/lifters/oil pump/bottom end noise and using a screw driver to "pin point" noise...any where i put the screw driver on them motor i hear the noise but normal sound of motor/exhaust seems to drown the noise out. Any thoughts/suggestions/questions that may help me out?

any body in the lancaster, pa area know a good buell mechanic/shop?

any body ever rebuild the bottom end?

what all usually needs done, how much did it cost you? Not trying to be cheap, not tryin to invest too much $, i only paid $2600 for the bike a year ago from a harley dealer.

what parts should i replace just because i have the motor torn apart that far?

Really not sure.. BAd oil pump drive gear ( pinon shaft ) on cam side known for this...and on the other side primary side Wrong torque numbers for the front engine primary sprocket...Needs I think 250 lbs.. and were just around 160 or so so it would back off making a noise at times..maybe others can chime in to help good luck...

Not a bad idea to drop the oil pump and look at that pinion gear on an 03, I think you still had the older style pinion gear in there. Check in several engine rotation positions, it can wear on just one side. Replace if worn.

It's very unusual for a 9 to have a crank problem.

I am originally from Lancaster, PA and in my humble opinion there was no better Harley dealer than Lancaster Harley Davidson and they were Buell friendly. With Ray's passing things could have changed, but I would sure check with them before I took anything apart.

I'm in Reading and have had great luck with White's HD in Lebanon. Extremely Buell friendly, and are an EBR dealership, so you can drool in those when you are there.

I remember buying a couple chrome plated parts for a 1960 Sportster at Whites. I think the guy in Reading that had the Harley shop was Applegate. Don Kissinger was one of his mechanics.
